Don't worry, Wikipedia, Google and various sites throughout the country haven't fallen under the control of a Cold War-era redaction campaign. Today marks a nationwide online protest of two proposed measures in Congress, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate.


The proposed acts would give the government more control over blocking websites and filtering the results of search engines like Google. Advocates for the bills argue that the changes are necessary to help mitigate online piracy, which has contributed to major revenue declines in revenue in the film and music industry.


Some of the world's biggest site, including Google, Wikipedia and Reddit are voicing their opposition to proposed measures on their homepages. On Wednesday, visitors of Google's homepage were greeted by a censor strip-styled Google Doodle, accompanied by the statement "Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web!".

Much to the chagrin of college and high school students countrywide, Wikipedia users were greeted with a similar screen shot and the following statement:

Google.com is the world's most trafficked website, Wikipedia is the sixth most popular.

Both sites, along with others, are being criticized by bill supporters, some web users and even some of Wikipedia's own editors, for blowing the issue of out of proportion and politicizing their websites, according to news reports.

The Las Conchas fire, southwest of Los Alamos and northwest of Santa Fe, is now the the largest fire in New Mexico history. The blaze is 27-percent contained and has burned more than 127,000 acres, according to fire officials. An evacuation, which forced some 12,000 Los Alamos County residents from their homes, was lifted on July 3. LANL is scheduled to re-open on Wednesday. More updates below:
