<span>Wed, Jan 18 2012 15:13:40</span></p><div class="element text" style="margin: 0 0 15px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em;"><p style="font-size: 14px; margin: 0;">Don't worry, Wikipedia, Google and various sites throughout the country haven't fallen under the control of a Cold War-era redaction campaign.&nbsp;Today marks a nationwide online&nbsp;protest&nbsp;of two proposed measures in Congress, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate.</p><p style="font-size: 14px; margin: 0;"><br /></p><p style="font-size: 14px; margin: 0;">The proposed acts would give the government more control over blocking websites&nbsp;and filtering the&nbsp;results&nbsp;of search engines like Google. Advocates for the bills&nbsp;argue that&nbsp;the changes are&nbsp;necessary to&nbsp;help mitigate online piracy, which has contributed to major revenue&nbsp;declines in revenue in the film and music industry.</p><p style="font-size: 14px; margin: 0;"><br /></p><p style="font-size: 14px; margin: 0;">Some of the world's biggest site, including Google,&nbsp;Wikipedia and Reddit&nbsp;are voicing&nbsp;their opposition&nbsp;to proposed measures on their homepages. The blaze is 27-percent contained and has burned more than 127,000 acres, according to fire officials. An evacuation, which forced some 12,000 Los Alamos County residents from their homes, was lifted on July 3. LANL is scheduled to re-open on Wednesday.
