Thanks, Jason. The short answer is: Because the Supreme Court said so. But that's the narrow legal question. The broader question of the influence of money in politics is a really good one. It's one of the questions I get asked the most when I'm on the road or talking to people who don't live in DC.

Darrell, thanks. It's obviously in Pres. Obama's interest not to declare this an "Obama Economy" -- at least not this year (not until November 6). Polls show that large number of Americans blame former Pres Bush for the economy, though some also show that people think Pres Obama's policies have either done little to fix things or made them worse. Last poll I saw had 44 percent putting "the economy" or "jobs" at the top of their concerns list. That's virtually sure to be the main issue in the election.

Verushka: In my previous go'round at the White House (I covered the last month or so of pres Clinton, and all eight years of Pres Bush) it was a recurring question. And the answer is that it's not really clear. Hezbollah (spellings vary) is thought to be one of just a handful of extremist groups with operatives in the United States. We may find out whether that's true in the event that push comes to shove in the standoff over Iran's nuclear program.

Rosemary: Great Q. There's a well-greased revolving door between senior government posts and high-paid jobs in the private sector -- experience in each is relevant in both. I've talked to so many voters who think it's crazy to bring people from Wall Steet in to police Wall Street (just one of many examples) but I'm afraid that I don't have any good solutions to suggest, apart from electing people that you are confident won't do the same thing.

I can report that in the absence of Ron Paul (who declined to participate this year) there were many fewer Paulites visible than in years past. And this afternoon, the line to get in to hear Romney speak was enormous. People began lining up more than an hour ahead of time knowing there was no guarantee they would get a spot in the ballroom.

Good question, Robert. I don't think the Republican party is trying to ignore middle-of-the-road voters, but I think it's important to remember that this is currently a battle for Republican nomination. Candidates are emphasizing what they believe will help them win over their base. I think you will see the nominee emphasizing general election credentials as the race moves into its second phase.

Ronnie- I think that the contraception issue does make for good political back-and-forth, especially because it ignites personal passions. But it is a real issue that the Obama administration has chosen to insert into the public dialogue at this time. We wouldn't see the president coming out today to explain himself and his proposal if he wasn't concerned about its reception among the American people.

The way i see it, if these GOP candidates choose to pander to the far right by saying what that group wants to hear and then thinks the nominee can "pivot" from that, it tells me that NONE of them have any backbone. Bunch of hypocrites. You can't scream about too much government and then demand that the same government regulate a woman's personal right to choose or deny a gay person's right to, in the view of CPAC, even exist.

Presidential elections are rarely "either/or" propositions. They are almost always "both/and." The Republican contenders are seeking to make the case for why President Obama should be fired before delving too deeply into why they should be hired. When running against an incumbent, getting the American people to the place where they are willing to fire the sitting president is a very high threshold -- and it is the entrance fee for any of these GOP contenders to have a real shot at winning the White House in November.

Andrew Irvan raises a great point about unemployment rate ticking down today. My first thought this morning when I saw that 243,000 jobs were added to the payrolls last month and unemployment now at 8.3% was wondering about the mood in Romney campaign HQ in Boston. Clearly this is great economic news for the country and very good political news for the president. Mitt Romney and his campaign operatives, of course, want to see more and more Americans back to work, but they are also clearly aware that strong economic news like this makes it harder to campaign solely on a message of Obama's failed economic stewardship. That being said, the country is still digging itself out of a very deep hole and lots of Americans are still in pain.

Great question, Bill. We do still see a significant level of dissatisfaction among Republican voters with their field, but I'm pretty sure this is it. So many prominent Republicans including Jeb Bush, Haley Barbour, Mitch Daniels, Chris Christie, and others refused being wooed into the race. I just don't see an opening at this late date for a late entrant.

Randy Mason makes a wise observation about Gingrich and Santorum not being on very state's ballot. Neither of them are on the Virginia ballot. Virginia is set to award 49 delegates (proportionally) on Super Tuesday - March 6. Only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are on the ballot.
