The recent shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman has brought to light an important issue that is a very touchy subject for a lot of people. Race and racial profiling. For many, many decades, multiple races have been the target for racial discrimination, right here in America. And I will not deny that progress hasn't been made but we are far from the end.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, racial profiling is a violation of human rights (ALCU). Racial profiling is the targeting of individuals or groups on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, or religion by law enforcement officials, hindering community policing efforts, and causing law enforcement to lose credibility and trust from the people they have sworn to protect. It has been acknowledged that racial profiling is unconstitutional, socially corrupting, and counter-productive (ACLU). Amnesty International states that it affects millions of people in the U.S. in the most routine aspect of their every day lives (Amnesty International USA). Although measures have been taken to combat racial profiling, such as the End Racial Profiling Act of 2004 and International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, it is still a widespread and pervasive problem throughout the U.S. by members of law enforcement at the federal, state, and local levels.

A recent article that was published by the New Jersey Weekly Business Journal, asserts that the unfortunate events that led to Trayvon Martin's death highlights the potential, dangerous outcome of racial profiling (Medina). Even though George Zimmerman is not a police officer, he is still acting as a law enforcement agent whose duty is to protect the citizens of a particular gated community in Sanford, FL. He used race as a determinate to investigate and wonder why Trayvon was walking around a predominantly affluent neighborhood. Without justice for this young boy and an end to the institutionalized racial profiling, many more innocent people of color will soon be targets of the system.

Recently, a young teen, Trayvon Martin, was shot and killed in his own neighborhood in Sanford, Florida. All he had in hand was a bag of skittles and ice tea. Protests after protests have taken place to bring justice to Trayvon and a readiness to end racial profiling.

Many marches have been going on all over the country and most recently, Washington D.C. There, protestors gathered as Trayvon's family and legal aides briefed Congress on racial profiling and hate crimes in response to the recent shooting.

From reading these two articles, this is what I formulated.

In light of the recent shooting of Trayvon Martin, hundreds gathered in Washington D.C. for the Million Hoodie March last week to protest justice for the young teen. "Trayvon Martin, Emmett Till: how many more youth will they kill?" Protesters chanted as they marched (Brown). Many of them believe their movement is about more than just Trayvon martin, it's about calling for justice and an end to racial profiling (Plater). the institutionalized system we live in needs to be changed because time and time again young, black teens have been targets of racial profiling.

George Zimmerman still has yet to be charged in the case and that raises many questions. Nationally to locally people all over have voiced their opinions of the case.

This issue hits home because I have been a victim of racial profiling. It happened when I was a senior in high school shopping around the mall with my cousins. I remember going into Bath and Body Works and a manager saying out loud to her coworker to check the tapes to see who stole some lotion. I knew it was directed at me because she was right next to me following me around the store. This store in the mall has had a series of theft from high schoolers and they believed that I stole lotions because apparently many of their thefts have been from minorities. I obviously didn't steal anything but the fact that she lumped me in a category of a thief because of my race really got to me. This is when I began to question racial profiling and race relations. Could I be the next Trayvon Martin the next time I walk into a store or wear apparel walking through my neighborhood? When will people move past racial profiling and see everyone as equal?

Just because Trayvon Martin was wearing a hoodie... that automatically categorizes him as up to no good?

Right here on the Syracuse University campus a couple of days ago was "Wear your hoodie day in honor of Trayvon Martin." Many students wore their hoodies to pay respect for him and protest to demand justice for Trayvon.

A panel was also held on Monday discussing the issue of hate crimes. Herbert Ruffin, an assistant professor of African-American studies, said that, "Hate groups are continuing to grow year after year," and urged students to act together and sign petitions to stand up to these types of issues.

Ruffin also stated that within the city of Syracuse, violence stems from the lack of people of color in the Syracuse Police Department. Even though the SPD chief of police is black, there is still a high volume of racial violence by police officers throughout the city, he said.

Nationally to locally, the shooting of Trayvon Martin has once again sparked conversations about racial profiling and race relations right here in America. America has progressed since the Civil War and African-American rights, but there is still a long way to go.

It is up to us as individuals to change our mindset and hopefully there will be justice for Trayvon Martin.
