I have been here almost 7 years and often describe it as "their dance cards are filled." The few friends I've been able to make are ex-pats from other states or lived most of their adult life elsewhere before returning to MN. Most of my friends back in New Orleans (and no, I was not a Katrina victim, moved here voluntarily months prior to the storm) were people I met in my late 20s and 30s. There we not only welcomed transplants to our community and included them socially, but we even brought them along to our parents' holiday gatherings and treated them like extended family so they wouldn't feel alone.

Growing up in Iowa, I was interested that when moving to Tennessee, the people seemed nice, but not genuine. When living in Delaware, people seemed genuine, but not nice. In Minnesota, people struck me as both genuine and nice. Sure there are exceptions everywhere and our shrinking world means regional characters are all blurred anyway.

I lived in North Dakota and Montana before I moved to Minnesota. In those states, if you weren't born there, you're never from there. I don't think that's true of Minnesota.

Flu vaccine not as effective as thought, new study says

A new comprehensive analysis of flu studies concludes that most flu vaccines provide only moderate protection against influenza, and in some years barely make a difference at all. That's contrary to the message given by the heavy promotion and easy access to the vaccine -- that anyone who is immunized will be protected from the flu.

In 2006 I got my flu shot in October just as I had for many years. In March I got the flu, really bad case and went to my doctor. I complained that the immunization must not have worked. He said that had I NOT had the shot, I might have died...rather a sobering thought. I hope he wasn't trying to put one over on me. I still get a flu shot every year. I feel the risk is minimal and even minimizing the illness is worth it.

We need real leaders, those who can see the long term big picture and are intelligent and courageous enough to make the hard decisions. But to get them we need educated voters to think independently and see through the unrealistic promises...

Paying late to the school districts is an immoral way to "balance" the budget. School districts now have to take out loans and PAY INTEREST because the state decided to pay late. That interest paid is tax payer's money NOT going to education, but to banks. The republican plan, which Dayton caved to flushes tax payers' money down the toilet, not very fiscally responsible!
