A content management system (CMS) is necessary for day-to-day breaking news and run-of-the-mill news production, but for more interesting journalism, usually the CMS is not good enough. It's too limiting. It imposes too many constraints.

"So innovative features, interactive features, must be built (by coders) outside the CMS. And then (as explained in 'Infect the CMS') the coders must build new hooks into the system that allow those features to be discoverable — to be found by the CMS search engine, to be visible in the CMS archives, to show up in the 'related items' sidebars of related stories in the CMS."

In the spring of 1993 the Web was still an experiment, a dream running on NeXT workstations in the particle physics laboratory at CERN. A new magazine had appeared on the newsstands, and on paper it brought our cyberdreams out into the light. [Wired 1.01]

On the masthead, Wired magazine named Marshall McLuhan as its patron saint.

McLuhan was Canadian, born in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He grew up to be the kind of English professor who teaches very hard texts to very bright students -- like Walter Ong, the author of Orality and Literacy (1982).

He began teaching at the University of Toronto in 1946, where he met Harold Innis (another great media scholar and fellow Canadian), who wrote The Bias of Communication (1951).

McLuhan was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the late 1960s; it was treated and reportedly did not recur. There's probably no connection -- although recent research has shown that the mind can change the brain -- but McLuhan seemed strangely lucid in his realization of just how our interaction with electronic media rewires us.

His own mind was like a petri dish in which the writing of James Joyce mixed with classical training in literary criticism and ideas about medieval scriptoria where Roman Catholic monks kept knowledge locked away in vaults. The notion that print -- the technology of typography -- had restructured our thinking, taking us from a holistic oral world into a straitened linear one, enabling science and mathematics to flourish (but at what cost?) bubbled and popped inside McLuhan's mind until he grasped the lightning bolt.

The funny thing is, it was TV and visual messages -- especially magazines and advertising -- that McLuhan was always talking about. He never saw a video game. He never saw a music video. He never saw the Internet.

Think about the TV he was watching -- 1960s TV. It was almost nothing like TV today. Everything then was slow, like slo-mo in a freaky flashback in a movie. McLuhan didn't even have a remote control. He probably never had a choice of more than half a dozen channels.

McLuhan saw clearly that people in the developed world in the 1960s were being bombarded by images and audio messages -- from billboards, radio, signs on buildings, TV, and even fashion. He saw this assault on our senses as a new way of learning and finding out about the world -- and he saw that it would slowly chip away the strong foundations of printed knowledge and learning.
