There's probably no connection -- although recent research has shown that the mind can change the brain -- but McLuhan seemed strangely lucid in his realization of just how our interaction with electronic media rewires us.<br /><br />His own mind was like a petri dish in which the writing of James Joyce mixed with classical training in literary criticism and ideas about medieval scriptoria where Roman Catholic monks kept knowledge locked away in vaults. The notion that print -- the technology of typography -- had restructured our thinking, taking us from a holistic oral world into a straitened linear one, enabling science and mathematics to flourish (but at what cost?) bubbled and popped inside McLuhan's mind until he grasped the lightning bolt.</div><div class="element link" style="margin: 0 0 15px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; padding: 10px 10px 5px; border: 1px solid #ddd; max-width: 500px; overflow: hidden;"><a href="http://www.macloo.com/mcluhan/" title="Get the Flash Player | mindymcadams.com Flash Player required to see the content" class="thumbnail" style="color: #429ec6; display: block; float: right; padding: 0 0 5px 10px;"><img src="http://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=macloo.com" alt="Tribute to Marshall McLuhan" style="display: block; width: 100px;" /></a><a href="http://www.macloo.com/mcluhan/" title="Get the Flash Player | mindymcadams.com Flash Player required to see the content" class="title" style="color: #429ec6;">Tribute to Marshall McLuhan</a><div class="description" style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.4em; color: #666;">Get the Flash Player | mindymcadams.com Flash Player required to see the content</div></div><div class="element image" style="margin: 0 0 15px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelchen9210/5051438865" style="color: #429ec6;"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4153/5051438865_259ee16a9a.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; display: block; margin-bottom: 5px;" /></a><div class="meta" style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.4em; color: #666;"><span>Marshall McLuhan 1974 by Yousuf Karsh</span> ·
