Cries in the street from Tahrir to Kobry Qasr-Al-Nile Friday evening aroung 9PM made me step out on my hotel balcony. A small group of protesters had stopped a riot police truck. Quickly more gathered, throwing stones at and kicking the vehicle. After only few minutes there were hundreds and the group succeeded in openinng the front door while attempting to set the vehicle on fire.

After about half an hour they managed to open the back door and someone from within the vehicle fired shots – maybe sound bombs. Ecstatic cries erupted and sporadic fighting soon followed by tear gas being fired from the Kobry Qasser Al-Nil street. At the same time the police vehicle was ignited and protesters, many wearing ”V for Vendetta”-masks, ran from the smoke and tear gas slowly poluting the air.

The amount of Western journalist at the cease-fire press conference held by the Gazan factions leaders were very few, but among them was EMAJ-reporter, Lena Odgaard, live tweeting the main messages. Here is her analysis.

Though it was not surprising that the leadership of the Gazan factions would be praising their own victory in their press conference following the announced cease-fire with Israel Wednes evening, the speeches of Khaled Mashalah (Hamas) and Ramadan Shallah (Islamic Jihad) also listed the main lessons learned by this past week's bloody and devastating conflict.

Throughout the day I was monitoring men in suits - not just anyone of course - at the Intercontinental Hotel in Cairo. The men, members of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad leadership as well as the Egyptian intelligence, ran through the fancy five start hotel lobby trying to sneak around a huge spring centered around an iconic Egyptian obelisk, though continuoously stalked by two other journalists and myself trying to get any hint of the status of a possible cease-fire.

With the sudden news of a bomb on a bus in Tel Aviv, any hope of an agreement seemed lost, but it somehow Egypt and the US managed to broker a deal which was announced by Reuters.

Shortly after the Egyptian president Morsi and US foreign minister, Hillary Clinto announced it publicly at a press conference followed by a press conference by the leaders of the Gazan factions.

Though the main message was naturally one of claiming victory - just as Israel's Netanyahu was it - the speeches of Mashal and Shallah also talked a lot about the lessons learned from this past week's escalation in violence. In view of the deal, looking back at the week of bombs flying in and out of Gaza the outcome is one of significant new political revelations in regards to understanding the new political scene of the Arab world, and these all came out during the speeches of the Gazan leaders.

The significant support of Gaza from Arab leaders in Egypt, Tunis, Turkey and Qatar shows that the political scene has changed in the Middle East. Newly elected leaders such as Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi and Tunisian prime minister, Hamada Al-Jabali, both share political ideology with Hamas and likely saw the past weeks’ confict as a bright opportunity to support a shift in power in the Palestian leadership as well as prove their own influence.

Especially, Egypt played a major role in facilitating the truce. Analysists had questioned how the backing of a Palestinian militaristic strategy would reflect on Morsi, but with the cease fire agreement it would seem, that he has only gained from his involvement.

In his public statement Wednesday, Ban Ki Moon endorsed Morsi’s role by praising his ”exceptional leadership”.

Iran has been perceived as the reason to the unprecedented capability of Hamas rockets to reach main cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (not since Sadam Hussein during the Gulf War in 1991). And though there remained little uncertainty of Iran’s support in arms supply, Mashal wiped out any doubt by by thanking Iran and saying they provided about half of the weapons while the other half were made in Gaza.

Though most of the hundreds of rockets fired into Israel hit deserted areas or were taken out by the very efficient Israeli Iron Dome system, the capability of Hamas to continuously launch and reach far away and normally unaffected areas served as a blow to the confidence of the Israeli population and a strengthening believe in the effect of armed resistance among the Palestinians.

Kampagnen blev sat i gang på den 77. dag af Bilal Diab og Thaer Halahlahs sultestrejke og dagen før den såkaldte 'Nakba' dag, hvor palæstinenserne mindes de cirka 700.000 mennesker, der flygtede ved Israels tilblivelse i 1948 og demonstrerer for 'retten til at vende tilbage'.

Kampagnen blev startet af den palæstinensiske kunstner, Hafez Omar, der på sin Facebook-side opfordrede folk til at dwonloade det brune fangebillede for at vise støtte til de sultestrejkende palæstinensere i israelske fængsler.

Han forklarede, at brun er farven på deres fangedragter, og mærket på brystet er den hebaiske forkortelse IPS (Israeli Prisons Service).

Jameel Dabat, en journalist fra det palæstinensiske mediehus, WAFA News Agency, var blot 'en af de mange som ændrede sit profilbillede, og gav på sin Facebook-side et bud på, hvorfor hundreder af palæstinensere valgte at gøre det samme:

"Billedet er en form for solidaritet...Billedet kan måske tiltrække international opmærksomhed til de palæstinensiske fanger. Det er en simpel genstus og det mindste vi kan gøre for dem," skrev han.

'Vi er alle fanger'

Kampagnen ramte med alt sin grafiske tydelighed en nerve og viste, at de palæstinensiske fanger var i de fleste palæstinenseres bevidsthed.

Selvom det har været et mindretal, der de seneste uger er gået på gaden i de utallige demonstrationer ved militærfængslet Ofer tæt ved Jerusalem eller i de større byer på Vestbredden, er de tusindvis af palæstinensiske fanger blevet en dominerende del af hverdagssamtalerne - ikke kun i den virale verden, men også den virkelige.

Mere end 60 procent af alle palæstinensiske mænd - og et stort antal kvinder - har været fængslet af israelske styrker på et tidspunkt i deres liv, og de sultestrejkende er derfor blevet et symbol på den almindelige palæstinenser, og den usikkerhed de lever i i forhold til ikke at vide, om eller hvornår det bliver deres tur

Som kampagnen spredte sig, fik billedet af de palæstinensiske fanger flere og flere forskellige 'ansigter'. Kvinder med og uden tørklæde. Mænd med eller uden skæg. Med den palæstinensiske 'kufiya' (tørklæde) over skulderen eller i form af drengen 'handala', der er et symbol på de palæstinensiske flygtninges håb om at kunne vende tilbage til deres oprindelige hjembyer.

Kampagnen startede dagen før 'Nakba', der betyder 'katastrofen' og henviser til oprettelsen af staten Israel i 1948, der førte til at hundredetusinder flygtede fra deres hjem og hundreder af hjem blev ødelagt. I dag bor de fleste af flygtningene stadig i lejre på Vestbredden eller i Syrien, Jordan og Libanon. I alt vurderes der at være omkring 8 millioner palæstinensiske flygtninge verden over.

Helt tilfældigt startede kampagnen også samme dag, som en aftale mellem fanger og Israel blev indgået, hvilket blot gav ekstra liv i online diskussioner som alle prøvede at skelne rygter fra fakta.

Social media tools are useful as easy and cheap means to collect and disseminate information. Not least when it comes to issues of keeping tap on security sector issues.

Social media tools are being used by journalists to find, follow and cover a wide variety of issues related to security sector governance, such as armed conflicts and social strives, public demonstrations, elections, parliamentary sessions / hearings, and court hearings.

Browsing through social media platforms, journalists can find sources of information through videos, pictures, tweets and Facebook status updates. For example videos about demonstrations celebrating the one year anniversary of the Egyptian revolution against the Mubarak regime.

Frustrerede over mangel på mediedækning af den sultestrejkende palæstinenser, Khader Adnan, har hans støtter valgt at ty til alternative metoder for at fange journalisters opmærksomhed.

Efter at have sultestrejket i 64 dage uden synderlig medieopmærkrsomhed, indtog historien om Khader Adnan både lokale, regionale og ikke mindst internationale medier i denne uge. I høj grad efter en gruppe palæstinensiske unge satte gang i en intens Twitter-kampagne under hashtagget #CoverKhader.

Men også store vestlige medier som britiske The Independent og bloggere på amerikanske Huffington Post og NY Times fik pludselig øje på den palæstinensiske mand, der blev fængslet d. 17. dercember og siden har været holdt i 'administrativ forvarring' uden af få at vide hvorfor. I protest har Adnan nægtet at indtage føde siden hans arrestation og har nu den sørgelige rekord, at være den palæstinensiske fange, der har sultestrejket i længst tid. Læger, der har tilset ham, vurderer hans tilstand som værende kritisk, og internationale aktører fra FN, blandt andet FN's særlige udsendte vedrørende menneskerettighedssituationen i de palæstinensiske områder, har appelleret til Israel om at løslade Adnan (i øvrigt en meddelelse, der også først blev sendt ud i denne uge). Og også EU's udenrigspolitiske chef, Catherine Ashton opfordrede lørdag Israel til at 'sikre' Adnans helbred.
