Kinyon Road fire one of the largest in the nation

The largest wildfire in the United States is currently blazing just southwest of Twin Falls, Idaho. Fire crews began responding to the fire on Saturday afternoon. Since then, the fire has expanded from 1,400 acres to 80,000 acres in less than 48 hours.

Starting around 4:00 p.m. Saturday, firefighters began responding to a small wildfire west of Castleford, Idaho. Photographer Ashley Smith and myself were called out to report from the scene a few hours later.

Smoke would continue to be a constant companion for the next two days. Winds pushed the flames around the dry grass and brush covered floor until it expanded to 150,000 acres.

Other Times-News reporters began posting what they were seeing from their own homes. Spectators drove as close as law officers would let them just to catch a peak of the flames. Dark clouds hung menacingly over Twin Falls.

In February, Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter issued an executive order requiring a task force to submit a proposal on improving Idaho's sage grouse management plan by June 1. The group began meeting across southern Idaho over the span of eight weeks and ended in Idaho Falls. I tagged along to cover the event and figure out what the group would recommend.

A closing quote on an abortion debate has one Idaho lawmaker facing quite a bit of criticism.

Just so we're all caught up to speed, here's the quote that started it all: “Rape and incest was used as a reason to oppose this," Winder said on the Senate floor. "I would hope that when a woman goes in to a physician with a rape issue, that physician will indeed ask her about perhaps her marriage, was this pregnancy caused by normal relations in a marriage or was it truly caused by a rape. I assume that's part of the counseling that goes on.”

Not surprisingly, news outlets immediately jumped on the story. It's worth pointing out that Winder never directly said women use rape as an excuse for abortion. However, he does seem to suggest that women may not know if it was caused by marriage.

Around 8 a.m., Idaho State Police attempted to stop an unidentified vehicle. The driver did not stop, resulting in a high speed chase in Twin Falls. The driver pulled over at the Hampton Inn. The excitement quickly picked up from there.

Wow, crazyiness in the big city of Twin Falls, got us a hostage situation. One ISP office shot in the leg and another victim sent to hospital. Suspect was pulled over in traffic stop for DUI and took off, hit an RV, to my understanding, then ran into a nearby hotel taking a hostage or two into a room. Things like that just don't happen around here.

Dean Nelson, director of PLNU's journalism program, wasn't joking. An email had been sent out to students earlier that due to the expected large crowds, chapel credit would be given to every student even if they didn't come to chapel.
