The #jiconf at Gainesville, FL, played host to a lively discussion between academics David Craig, Steve Fox and Ginny Whitehouse and myself, Kelly Fincham. We debated current social media ethics and possible best practices for journalists. Topics included verification and privacy.

Some basic principles

This list is a work in progress based on thoughts from the panel, and it reflects a range of opinion from the panelists. We encourage everyone reading this to let us know your thoughts on what to add or change.

Behind this discussion were the ethical principles of seeking truth and reporting it, acting independently and minimizing harm. These show up in the SPJ ethics code and the Poynter Institute guiding principles and in a long history of ethics scholarship. We think they are still relevant but need to be applied in new ways.

Don’t be stupid.

Assume that everything you post on a social network is public.

Understand that retweets can and in many cases will be considered an endorsement.

Don't retweet information you don't know to be true. If needed, report before retweeting.

There's no excuse for passing along bad information. Ask yourself: What do I know?

Verify information before sharing or RT-ing or ask audience to help verify.

Attribute information to the original source.

Always ask yourself, "Should you do it just because you can?"

1,000 Irish turn out to volunteer for Sandy relief in Rockaways

UPDATE:More than 1,000 Irish volunteers braved bitter cold Nov. 24 to help out in the Rockaways in New York, an area hard-hit by Hurricane Sandy. About 600 people were bused in from across the five boroughs and beyond while another 400 came by car. This Storify is a snapshot of the massive effort.

Colleagues Krista Gotcliffe and Matt Golebiewski drove to Long Beach to volunteer Saturday.
They handed out bagels which were generously donated by Bagel Boss in Hewlett and Franklin Bagels in Franklin Square.

Krista and Matt bought water and other supplies through donations from themselves, friends and family.

Krista and Matt work together at New Horizon Counseling Center in Far Rockaway, NY.

Long lines as Long Islanders search for gas

Gas shortages are testing drivers's patience across Long Island. NY Governor Andrew Cuomo today promised that more gas would be available soon. In the meantime, drivers are being advised to stay calm as they wait in these long lines.

Close to 100 people wait on line to fill up gas cans at a Getty gas station in Massapequa. Most customers were from neighboring towns including Wantagh and Seaford just trying to get a few gallons of gas for their generators or cars. One side of the pumps was strictly for gas cans and the other side was for cars. The car line stretched around the block and back onto Broadway, accumulating upwards of 100 cars waiting in line. · Mike Stainkamp

Newsday is tweeting gas stations with gas on LI... Maybe we can do this. Here is what I know... Gas stations with gas right now: Valero in Oceanside (across from Wild by Nature), Spirit in Lynbrook (on the corner of Scranton and Broadway) has gas but a $20 limit, and the station on Union (right by the LHS) also has gas.
