NPR's social media product manager Kate Myers and business partnerships director Lily Ladd talked and answered questions for 90 minutes this morning about their organization's approach to social media and engagement.

This event was part of Social Media Week in Washington, D.C., and a few dozen people who work in social media-related jobs were there, along with me.

I should note before we dive in that Myers and Ladd work on the product side of the organization, not in editorial. So they're more responsible for how NPR uses social media strategically, not what it posts as news content.

3. What actually drives user engagement?

NPR sees six factors that create an engaged audience -- quality content, hearing the "voice" behind the content, letting the public feel some ownership of the NPR brand, appropriate message frequency, involving the public in the journalism and rewarding participation with recognition and inclusion in the news product.

Even if you accept that the photographer and other bystanders did everything they could to try to save the man, it's a separate question of what the Post should have done with that photo.

All journalists we've seen talking about it online concluded the Post was wrong to use the photo, especially on its front-page.

The NY Post cover today crosses the line, IMHO. A pic of a man pushed onto a subway track right before he is struck and killed. Grim.

NBC, MSNBC 9/11 anniversary broadcasts stir controversy

Today is, of course, the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It was the biggest news event of a generation, but particularly iconic for television news.

The 9/11 attacks were primarily a TV experience for most Americans -- striking in the heart of America's media capital, with news choppers circling the towers feeding live footage to network morning shows.

And so, as years pass and commemorations no longer make A1 at newspapers like The New York Times or New York Post, the TV networks stay strong on the story.

The most controversial approach is MSNBC's tradition of re-airing the original Today Show broadcast from that morning -- nonstop footage of the second plane striking, towers burning and eventually falling.

Viewers seemed widely split in their opinions about that practice.

Every year I find MSNBC's complete replay of its 9/11 original broadcast to be equal parts fascinating and horrifying.

MSNBC is replaying NBC's live coverage from the morning of 9/11. Nothing like reliving a national disaster minute by minute. I can't imagine what it must be like to stumble across this after having lost someone on that day.

In an interview with Reuters, Moynihan tried to make the point that his newfound fame as the guy who exposed Lehrer's fabrications would be fleeting.
