Update, 11/26: Shortformblog has run the numbers and found that TIME covers split about 60 - 40 between hard news stories and features. While the U.S. edition isn't more "soft" per se than the international ones, the times it did diverge are notable because a feature story was chosen over an immediately newsworthy event. When you tweet something that turns out to be wrong, the temptation is huge to hit the delete button, hoping no one saw the mis-tweet. Don't do it. I know this because I did.

An Italian court acquitted Amanda Knox of murdering her British roommate Monday. However, the jury found Knox guilty of slander against a bar owner whom she accused of the crime. In our newsroom, the announcement was running on multiple channels, and the Italian translation wasn't great. The guilty verdict was read first.

I tweeted it from the @ABC7News account, saying "Amanda Knox was found guilty in Italy".

Minutes later, the presiding judge added that Knox was found guilty only in the slander charge, but cleared of the other, more important murder charge.

Thinking I had made a mistake, I quickly deleted the initial tweet. Here's why you shouldn't do that.

1. It's already out there. You're hoping nobody saw the tweet, but people did. When you delete it, they will notice.

2. It makes it look like you made a mistake. In this case, I hadn't: Knox had been found guilty in one charge. Of course, she had been acquitted of the more important one.

If you made a mistake, it will look like you're trying to hide it. Which won't work (see number 1).

3. It confuses your audience. Besides being afraid I made a mistake, I also though it would be confusing to tweet "found guilty" and "found not guilty" in two subsequent tweets. Well, deleting the tweet was just as confusing.

I was not the only one who was thrown off the verdict. The Daily Mail posted a story saying Knox had been found guilty.

The Guardian mistakenly wrote in its liveblog that Knox's appeal had been denied. They deleted the wrong statement and later posted a note saying:

"We were too quick to run with our initial understanding of the ruling, as it was being translated, but as soon as we realised the mistake it was corrected immediately."

Here's what I should have done: Leave the tweet. It's already out there. People have seen it and you can't undo it.

As soon as I knew more, I should've sent another tweet with details to explain the two seemingly opposite updates.

In a broader sense, I should've waited a minute and double-checked, an exercise for your nerves in a breaking news situation when everyone is rushing to be first. Being right is more fun.

Craig Walker of the Denver Post won a 2010 Pulitzer Prize in photography for his photo essay following a young soldier from recruitment through deployment. I highly recommend you take a look - it's fantastic.
