Absolutely. It can be a very powerful newsgathering tool, because a) primary source material (as opposed to links to existing stories) is often posted there, and b) many reddit users have an incredible knowledge base on their particular areas of interest, making them potentially powerful sources. Also, honestly, a lot of mainstream journalists still aren’t really paying attention to reddit, so if you do, you can give yourself a real competitive advantage.

I was a producer for AP Television News. I started getting into this new social media thing because I thought it looked interesting and I'm a bit of a geek. Then the protests in Egypt happened and I started putting what I had learnt into practice for newsgathering. Those skills only became more valuable and now it is my full time job.

I've been a journalist for 18 years, the last 13 of them at AP. I've had a number of old-fashioned editing jobs here, ranging from national news editor to top stories editor to supervising editor. But I've also had a lot of gigs that moved me toward more innovative and interactive content. I was the news editor of asap, an experimental and multimedia-oriented news operation within AP that existed from 2005 to 2007 -- we did a lot of innovative pieces there (IM debates among political bloggers, handing a camera to a member of the public during a news event, etc.) that were precursors to social media, I think. I also edited Ask AP, which (several years ago) had AP journalists answer reader questions.

If we need to correct a tweet (or a post to another social network), we simply put out a new tweet (or post) offering the correct information and noting what we got wrong. We start with “Correction:” so it’s clear what we’re up to. We generally won’t delete the erroneous tweet or post. It’s important to note that our handling of such tweets is integrated with our broader correction procedures -- when we relay incorrect information, we make sure we correct it everywhere we sent it.

It really depends where UGC is uploaded. Many platforms have different policies regarding content ownership. In many cases though copyright is retained by the person who captured the content and uploaded it. We just think it is right to ask someone for permission to use their content and so that is what we strive to do. Beyond the issue of ownership and copyright it is also important for us to identify an original source as part of our verification. Making contact with that person allows us to get further information and evaluate the authenticity.

There are going to be cases like this when it wouldn't be responsible for us to name sources of UGC publicly. We always make an assessment of whether it would be safe for us to do so. However, when we are asked to withhold a name it is important that we still know the source of that content so that we can run it through our verification process. The decision also involves senior editors at the AP.

Even in the 1970s, when I was beginning my career, we were educating the public that we are paramedics and EMTs, not "ambulance drivers." That campaign has continued, in part because of continuing mislabeling of us in the media. <br> <br> Worse than th...e possibly genuine ignorance of the headline writer on this account has been the sloppy defense of it. Calling a trained EMS crew "ambulance drivers" can not be defended by any reference to editorial practices. It's your professional responsibility to accurately depict the world you are reporting on; when you fail in that, the only ethical response is to apologize, correct your mistake, and "do better next time." If you continue to defend a wrong practice, it casts doubt on your professional integrity (and also makes me wonder about any unspoken agendas). <br> <br> If you want to educate and report properly, a suggestion is for the paper to research and write a piece on the education, clinical training, responsibilities, etc., of EMS crews in Ulster County. No one wants to think about needing us, so few people truly know what's involved in our work--yet everyone expects (and should) highly-trained, competent personnel to respond when their family has an emergency. The Daily Freeman can help in being part of the solution to a problem that the paper itself highlighted--or it can continue to be part of the problem. We are hoping to see positive follow-up in this matter.<br>

I am an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). When your leg is severally broken I can reposition it and split it allowing blood flow back into your tissue potentially saving your limb from amputation.<br> When you are having a heart attack I can begin the treatment necessary to save your life.<br> When your heart stops beating I will place my hands on your chest and externally compress your heart attemptin...g to get it to beat again. While I place a bag over your mouth and breath for you.<br> When you are scared to death because you had to call 911 because you are having an emergency I will walk through your door and put you at ease.<br> <br> I am a Paramedic<br> When your leg is broken and splinted I will take a needle and catheterize your vein in the back of a moving ambulance. I will do this while bouncing over city streets and when you cry out in pain because your leg hurts so back I will draw up medication and give it to you through the IV that I started and take your pain away.<br> When you are having a heart attack I will continue the life saving treatment started by my EMT partner. I will hook you up to a machine and do a 12 Lead EKG. To you this will look like a bunch of squiggly lines. I will look at this and know exactly which part of your heart is being affected. I will then give you numerous medications to treat your pain and the very tissue in your heart that is dying by the second. I will call the ER and tell them what is happening and they will be ready for you when we get there.<br> When your heart stops beating I will insert a tube directly into your trachea that will lead to your lungs and I will squeeze a bag and manually breath for you while my EMT partner compresses your heart with their hands. I will start an IV and give numerous medications that could literally bring you back to life. If I need to pass electricity through your body, I will do that to. I will hang medication drips that are available in hospitals in an attempt to do everything necessary to save you.<br> My EMT partner will continue to care for you while I search all over for your medication bottles, because I know if I can read your pill bottles I can know your entire medical history. I will speak calming words to your family members as they worry about your condition. I will then work tirelessly and constantly to care for you. I will care for you though my ‘lunch break’, I will care for you when I am supposed to be in my car on my way to my sons soccer game and when he asks me later why I wasn’t there I will reply “because I needed to help someone”. I will NOT reply with “because I needed to drive an ambulance to someones house”.<br> Mr. Adamis, If God forbid you needed and ambulance for an emergency would you want someone who can drive an ambulance to come to your home or would you want a EMT or Paramedic? If there isn’t a difference then I guess you will never have to worry. <br>

I have hundreds of hours of classroom time years of in the field experience. I have challenged death and won.<br> I've helped the helpless<br> I've neglected my family for yours<br> I find comfort in complete chaos<br> I eat cold meals if I eat at all<br> I miss birthdays, holidays, and school functions<br> I put myself in harms way for a total stranger on a daily basis<br> ALL BECAUSE I AM AB AMBULANCE DRIVER<br> <br> I am an ambulance driver!! I drive through congested traffic full of people who refuse to yield right of way while my partner stands unrestrained in the back of this screaming land missile saving your loved ones life! I'm willing to bet that "Paramedic Hurt" would also let the readers know that the person injured was in the ambulance. As others have pointed out, would you say Police car driver hurt, fire truck driver hurt, or even mail truck driver hurt? You're headline perpetuates the notion that EMS is a lesser emergency service. While this is not the reason we want to make the news, if we do, we appreciate being labeled correctly
