Charge people to attend, bring in advertisers, etc. Some local sites, like the Sacramento Press, have also offered consulting services for businesses on things like social media. AOL has spent more than $50 million on Patch. It doesn't appear to be successful so far, but AOL has said it's a long-term venture. Advertising has nothing to do with the local sites - it's national advertising. Main St. Connect is a venture in the northwest, and it appears to be doing better.
