The violent storms we had in Tennessee in May and June took out part of my roof, leaving water damage in one room and a lightning surge from another storm claimed my television and DVD player.

The insurance covered enough to replace the roof and repair the damaged bedroom. This left me looking for options to replace the TV and paid programming. The Roku seemed the soundest choice. I could trim my cable bill and use that savings for a new television.

I picked the Roku 2100X XDS Streaming Player 1080p over the other models for two reasons.

The first reason was it has more outputs to cover more televisions, like my old RCA that came out of retirement following the lightning storms. The second reason is the Extended-range Wireless-N that was b/g/n compatible. Where I have my television is about 45 feet from the WiFi router. I didn't want move the router or go pulling Ethernet.

Having an Amazon Prime membership really pays off with the Roku. On top of getting the two-day free shipping you get unlimited and commercial-free instant access to 1,000's of movies and television programs through the Amazon Instant Videos section for no additional fee. Already I'm saving on video rentals.
