When users wanted to highlight a tweet they particularly liked, they would have to copy and paste the tweet, reference the original tweeter using their handle, and type in "RT" before the tweet to make it clear the tweet was not their own words.

In 2009, Twitter rolled out its own solution to retweeting. When a user wanted to retweet someone else, they just had to click the retweet button and the tweet would go out seamlessly into the user's Twitter stream. No "RT" was included before the tweet. Instead, a phrase at the bottom of the tweet says, "Retweeted by @handle."

Example of an old-school "RT":

RT @c_heller: "David Foster Wallace once took a shit inside Jonathan Franzen’s favorite duvet cover as a prank." http://bit.ly/Q1zuBG

— Jared Keller ·
