#pubhack was held at Alley NYC over the weekend and I not only had a great time (building is so fun) but the site I built was named a finalist! I get to go to Book Expo next week and pitch again.

I worked with @chrisciabarra on an idea I've had for about a year. I thought I'd need to learn Rails to build it, but Chris convinced me we could do it it Wordpress, since we just needed a prototype. We finished building and designing around 2 a.m. and then began a quest for SEO. 
Presentations were on Sunday afternoon and I had a lot of fun telling the audience how, growing up, a bookstore was a hangout, not a place to buy things. I want Coverlist to be an experience, not a store.

After five of the six finalists were announced, I was satisfied with a fun weekend well-spent -- not at all expecting Coverlist to be the final finalist announced! So exciting. So good to build something I really like and find that other people like it, too. Also, the lego prize is pretty sweet.

Just before things kicked off, already 65 people had checked in on Foursquare, which is an indication that the house was indeed packed.
The meetup started with a video clip of the series NYTM will be launching tonight -- including interviews with founders about their experiences. It's through a partnership with NASDAQ.
Before the demos, an announcement about Summer QAmp, a way to introduce high school students to the tech scene. 
Two winners of a recent hackathon presented -- Sensible Text and Audigram.
The first presenter showed how a user-uploaded image can get you recommendations of skin and makeup products, based on color, but the technology also works to find a purse to match a dress, or a car paint color to match upholstery. 
Exciting for graphic designers especially, Folio is a lightweight marketplace for content -- easier than using Google images, etc., plus, you can sell your own creations. It's not just a warehouse -- the content will be curated by specialists who can actually profit from what they approve. Audio files are being added and text documents will soon as well, so the platform has applications for other creative professionals and engineers. 
The founders of Launch.it are a father/son team. They've built a community for "anything new" and offer both visibility and credibility to founders or PR professionals usually tasked with launching products. One pain point they noted is the decreasing number of journalists, and offered the concept of the PR/journo. Could it work? The social tools Launch.it put in place enable the community to hold publishers accountable. Already 15 PR agencies are using it.

It was a simple, genuine request often asked by journalists -- and a smart move into the social media age, where everyone's Rolodex is much, much bigger. 
But, journalists were quick to point out that, if the reporter just needed an opinion or anecdote from *anyone* who owned a dog, did she need to reach out to AP's massive Twitter following (913k)?
The jokes began rolling in ...
As someone who follows about 90 percent journalists on Twitter, I agree :)

News orgs are looking for ways to use citizen content. But, with some concerns.

Carvin has earned a lot of respect. He works for NPR, a brand with credibility of its own. Carvin has developed a suite of contacts via Twitter that no other journalist has. He also spends a *lot* of time on this -- it's hard to not be impressed!
