This freelancer says his offensive Complex article was all a misunderstanding and the work of shoddy editing. His ex-girlfriend begs to differ.

When freelancer Luke Winkie penned a contentious "40 Hottest Women in Tech" article for Complex, he wasn't, by his own account, expecting to see the list get truncated, watered-down, and replaced. But the alleged editorial work on the article has raised several voices in outrage--including his own ex-girlfriend, @kttykatie.
Here's her reaction to the article:

Winkie tried to explain—er, sort of:
But Stroh wasn't having it.
The $500 she referred to was evidently the fee Winkie received from Complex for writing the article, according to a comment she left in Branch:

It's five hundred (500) dollars. He literally texted me four days ago basically saying "Complex wants me to do this thing and I know it's shitty but... it's $500." I told him what I thought, which he responded to with "$500."


Meanwhile Winkie tried to explain himself even further, laying the blame entirely at his editors' doorstep:

I was assigned to write the 50 Hottest Women in Tech by Complex and it really bummed me out, because the idea of perpetrating the same old gender divisions in an area like tech - which has predominantly been a boy's club throughout history - seemed like kind of a messed up thing to do. It represents the most banal form of internet content that exists. But it's hard to say no to a paycheck.

So what I tried to do was see if it was possible to make something called "The 50 Hottest Women in Tech" earnest and empowering and an actual good thing. I pretty much only included normal looking women, who were involved in something really crucial or exciting in the tech space. I made no allusions to their looks in the blurbs, and ended up with simply a long list of very exciting women.

Of course when the piece actually ran, I discovered that over half of the women I had included were replaced with people like Morgan Webb, complete with the usual lascivious dialogue. Sigh. It's hard to win when you're writing for Complex, but please know that I tried.
While Complex is not exactly known for respectfully portraying women, Stroh was busy putting the finger on her ex:

The Ohio Attorney General prosecuting the Steubenville rape case, found that the rapists ( those promising football players) and their friends, sent 396,270 texts regarding the crime, 380,586 photos online, and 940 video clips to social media, in the US and internationally. I sincerely hope that they prosecute and jail every single friend, acquaintance, parent, minister, teacher, coach that had even a sprinkling of the knowledge of this crime but let it happen because those boys were "important", even if they have to turn the entire town into a concentration camp.

CNN's coverage of the Steubenville rape trial (in which, thankfully, the two alleged rapists are now convicted rapists) has focused more on the poor little rapist boys whose lives are now ruined than the victim, whose life was forever changed when these juvenile delinquent sexual deviants raped her . . .
