Marilynne Robinson points to something more worrying; that segmentation contributes to a caustic 'us versus them' mentality, divisiveness and intolerance. This must seem anathema to the possibilities envisioned by a free, global, online exchange of ideas, but perhaps not wholly unsurprising - this doctrine is heavily connected with the, as Robinson puts it, 'brutal' realities of the Libertarian free markets ideal. Perhaps the great challenge to restoring a sense of serendipity requires a great psychological leap, on a cultural level, to respecting the views of others, a more civil discourse, so that we can be open to listening, receiving or trying out new ideas. &nbsp;</div><div class="element link" style="margin: 0 0 15px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; padding: 10px 10px 5px; border: 1px solid #ddd; max-width: 500px; overflow: hidden;"><a href="http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/increasingly-threatening-taglines-for-beauty-products" title="Lists Send your list submissions to lists@mcsweeneys.net.
