After 14 years of civil war in Liberia, Leymah Gbowee and the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, a coalition of Christian and Muslim women, barricaded the exit to stalled peace talks in Ghana and demanded a resolution.

Davis, who was convicted of the 1989 murder of off-duty policeman Mark MacPhail in Savannah, GA, was put to death by lethal injection on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 after the United States Supreme Court denied a stay. Seven of nine eyewitnesses who testified in Davis' trial later recanted, casting doubt on his guilt and rekindling the death penalty debate in United States.
