The Attention Economy

The session began with an introduction to the concept of "The Attention Economy" - how in an age of abundant information, it is important to be able to persuade others to notice your activities and so attention becomes the important currency of exchange.

This concept was first introduced by Prof. Herbert Simon (Nobel Laureate in Economics):

An example of current technology for tracking gaze, which can produce visual gaze-tracking path maps, such as this one:

Imagine what this technology will do, with a little bit of time? It would be simple to measure attention as a function of time per gaze residence on any set of pixels. Then we could start tracking units of attention, and determine where people were investing their attention.
Adrian's point here comes from a specific paragraph in Cory Doctorow's book, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (free online!!), where he outlines a reputation economy using a virtual currency known as the 'Whuffie' :

"Dan moved to block the bedroom door. “Wait a second,” he said. “You need rest.”

I fixed him with a doleful glare. “I’ll decide that,” I said. He stepped aside.

“I’ll tag along, then,” he said. “Just in case.”

I pinged my Whuffie. I was up a couple percentiles—sympathy Whuffie—but it was falling: Dan and Lil were radiating disapproval. Screw ’em."

Adrian: Notice in this passage, it is made clear that not only can Whuffie be given if someone feels positively about you, but it can be taken away when someone feels negatively about you.


We could see functional gazetracking technology for regular use within the next five years. Using a cap/implants to scan your brain for your disposition on a regular basis is probably more like 10 years away. A reputation economy, in my opinion, could only follow on the heels of an attention economy.

January 13th, the opening evening of Science Online 2011, was a flurry of exciting activity as attendees connected twitter tags to faces. An opening speech by Robert Krulwich of RadioLab left everyone inspired enough to drop some mean jamming and dancing later that evening at the open mic.

The lead-up to one of the most anticipated science communication conferences of the year was a stressful time for many, with a fickle snow storm teasing the flight paths of those coming via north-eastern US flight paths.
I obsessively checked and re-checked my flight status online, convinced the 'Weather Advisory' warning would result in a cancellation. However, the mild snow on my drive down to the Syracuse airport and the clear skies predicted all day at my transfer point of Washington, D.C. suggested I would make it to Raleigh on time. 
Before I had arrived at the hotel, I observed the first funny meme of #scio11:
Although Bora did not quite reach his target, it certainly fuelled the jealousy of those who didn't make it to the conference.  
Meanwhile, the opening reception event, held at Research Triangle Park Headquarters, was prepared with delicious snacks and a (free!) open bar.

The first thing to greet each attendee was a massive screen in the opening hallway that displayed two columns filled with nothing but #scio11 tagged tweets. Smartphones were mobilized for the satisfaction of visible self-promotion.
After some cocktail-style conversations around chest-high tables, we were ushered into a presentation room with three projector screens and the first of many great presentations began. At this point, the tweeting began to speak for itself.

This year, while working on an early episode for Peer Review Radio, I had the fortune of running across Obesity Panacea. I quickly identified that one of the two bloggers was located several labs over at the University of Ottawa, where I do postgrad research in biochemistry. A medalist in two marathons and a PhD. student in exercise physiology, Travis Saunders was exactly the kind of student that would stand out to young students looking at science as a future career option.

After completing an interview for our fourth episode, I brought up the Pepsigate affair (a.k.a. a mass exodus of bloggers from Scienceblogs.com) simply because I was excited to get someone's take from the inside. After learning a little about blogging politics, Travis suggested that if I was really interested in becoming part of this online community, I should attend the Science Online 2011 conference.

ScienceOnline2011 is the fifth annual international meeting on Science and the Web. On January 13-15th, 2011 the Research Triangle area of North Carolina will once again host scientists, students, educators, physicians, journalists, librarians, bloggers, programmers and others interested in the way the World Wide Web is changing the way science is communicated, taught and done.

I sat back, eagerly awaiting the registration date.

As in all the previous years, the meeting will be held in an ‘Unconference’ style – the Program is built beforehand with the help of participants on the wiki, and the sessions are designed to foster conversations and discussions rather than a more traditional lecture approach.

I found the informality of using a wiki to organize a conference discomforting. Admittedly, I have never attended a conference before this, but in my mind I had images of elegantly finalized websites with carefully manicured schedules. However, the amount of interest that the conference was drawing long before registration...
... was too substantial to overlook. So I kept checking back every day, to watch the program progress through its discussion phase. Meanwhile, registration was just around the corner...
... and the number of tweeps tweeting about it made me certain those coveted 300-so spots would be snapped up quickly. Around 11:30am EST, I ensured all my experiments were paused and my C2C12 cells were safely incubating at 37 degrees celcius. Then, I sat on the conference home page clicking refresh obsessively. With twitter open in another tab, I noticed...
... and filled out the form with Google Chrome's awesome auto-complete ability. 
Less than an hour later, it was full...
... and there were plenty of deserving science bloggers left wanting.
Shortly thereafter the conference would see its program finalized and sponsors added.
