Fri, Mar 30 2012 13:45:42

For decades, Canada had a program that embodied many of this great nations true values; community building, multiculturalism, pluralism, democracy, empowerment and hope for a brighter future. This program was Katimavik. On March 29 of 2012, as the vicious blade of the budget axe fell, it tore away a sliver of hope for many of this nations youth. Driving a stake deep into a program that had helped new generations forge a path forward for a nations future.

Every day youth, at-risk youth, young leaders, kids full of ideas, dreams and a desire to create a better nation, all have had an opportunity to grow through Katimavik. It's primary 9 month program tossed into a house ten youth from different economic and socio-cultural backgrounds, French, English and new immigrants to Canada. They had to learn to live and work together, to share resources and work in communities and cities across this nation and far into our northern communities. These youth would help build community halls, parks, train the handicapped and many other programs that desperately needed helping hands. And so too, did the communities where they lived and worked benefit.

Perhaps more importantly, these youth from all over this nation came together and would forge relationships that may last a lifetime. They would understand our nation better, see it's beauty and find ideas that they could implement as they grew older to make this nation a better place. As an alumni of the program in the 1980's, I can testify to Katimavik's ability to bring immense and invaluable change to a person. We learned to seek dialogue before conflict, to understand the complexities that make up our nation from different cultures to democracy to values. Because the participants did not pay, those in dire economic situations could also participate and grow, discovering their ability to push out from what might otherwise have been a meek existence. We found confidence in ourselves and one another. We came away with a deeper respect for other cultures and languages, one that would help ensure the values of Canada could go on and become even better.

A paltry blip on the budget lines of a nation, the callous and coldly calculating cut for political reasons have now ripped away perhaps the greatest opportunity for youth to find themselves and find a nation. A program that connected the future leaders of our country has been sanctioned to the hollow and miserable halls of infamy. Many thousands of Canadians who found hope through Katimavik will mourn this day...until perhaps once again, a more benevolent and hopeful government might resurrect it from the tailings pile of political pettiness.

MT “@althiaraj: A Tory told me they view #Katimavik as a Liberal recruiting ground.” Because it produces smart & caring people #cdnpoli

— Stephen Lautens ·

Mon, Feb 20 2012 20:12:58

In recent research by MediaBadger, a digital media research firm in Canada, it was found that social media played a pivotal role in how activist groups were able to rally support for their cause to block the pipeline, change public perceptions and work around traditional public relations tactics by a large corporation.

The result was clear - no longer can large multi-national corporations rely on traditional PR methods and "politics-as-usual" to get approvals on major projects like the Keystone Xl Pipeline. This groundbreaking research showed a number of important points;

1. Activist Groups small and large across Western Canada, the Western, Central and Eastern U.S. effectively used social media tools to organise coordinated protests and messaging.

2. Messaging carried effectively across borders and even swayed traditional news media coverage with activist group stories opposing the pipeline garnering over 75% of the over 900 articles analysed by MediaBadger and its software.

3. There were over 1,500 citizen generated videos created and promoted across YouTube and other video channels. Over 350,000 "tweets" on Twitter, over 35,000 photos shared across multiple channels, including social networks such as Facebook and more than 1,800 blog posts on the topic.

4. Surprise Finding: Yet support for the project also increased proportionately with opposition and the analysis showed that near the end of the most recent effort support was catching up with opposition.

5. How These Tools Were Used: It is a complex communications process, yet simply elegant. As more and more content is created by opponents, more than the company itself created, it was the content of the opponents that appeared in more places (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, news media, blogs, video sharing sites) and thus created an overwhelming perception that there was more opposition than support. Couple this digital onslaught with traditional communications such as letters to congressmen, members of parliament in Canada, Senators in the US and so on and quickly the perception becomes the reality - that there is more opposed than for.

Although the decision has been "delayed" for the time being, it may resurface as a 2012 election issue yet in the U.S. and has caused the Canadian government to aggressively seek markets in Asia. It is a political hot potato and an issue for TransCanada either in Western Canada or into the U.S. - but when the next round comes, will they be ready to engage? Even if they are, can they win against a highly organised citizenry? That is a question that awaits answering. With a majority government in Canada and an election at least 3 years away, it may be easier for TransCanada in Western Canada.

Stop the tar sands pipeline, it's about the climate. Fri, Feb 17 2012 15:43:07

The use of social media technologies to create awareness and organise protests and “camp-ins” last year (and some continue today) was the first time these tools were used on an international scale; says MediaBadger digital media research firm. This is unprecedented in the history of mankind, at such speed and with incredibly well organised precision. As the Occupy protests lengthened, most often, it would seem, those protestors featured by many news media channels were the down-and-out, hippies and young students disenfranchised. Stories of partying, drugs and alcohol seemed the perfect fodder. But were they? Are they? We did some digging to analyse just who is online and who makes up the Occupy movement. What we found was not what we thought we would find.

Forget About Youth In Occupy Movement – The Demographics
It wasn’t just a bunch of university students. In fact, as we analysed the age groups, we found the average age to actually be 36. We also found that across the 5,000 profiles and commentaries we looked at, over 50% had a university education. We also found they weren’t poor either. Perhaps the “working poor” – yes. We estimate an average income of about $45,000CAD from USA, Canada and UK. We suspect this median would hold up in many other countries as well. Certainly there were those who are on the margin of society and the students or youth movement. But they do not represent the majority. Involved were doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs. Nor was there racial or religious divide. All forms of faith and races were represented as were men and women.

It’s Not A Union Driven Thing
That unions played a key part there is no doubt. Unions have and likely will continue to, play a key role. But unions, mentions of unions and references to union messages we estimate were less than 10% of the overall social media engagement. The Occupy movement is not owned or being driven by unions. The unions help in rallying and organising but it is being driven not by any one organisation. It is truly driven by the average citizen.

Activist Groups & Agitators
While some may suspect underlying activist groups with more radical agendas, this doesn’t appear to be the case. We found little evidence of more fringe, radical activist groups. The organisations that support the Occupy Movement are more socially oriented, those that are necessary in a functioning democratic society.

Media Summary Conclusion
While we haven’t provided all the detail of our research here, we can quickly surmise that the Occupy Movement is international in nature, it is still active and likely to become increasingly more organised. What started out in anger and protest with no defined agenda has developed an agenda and is refining that agenda. This is truly a movement more of the disenfranchised middle class who are also looking to the margins of society to help them as well.

Our forecast is that we will see increased Occupy activity and a clearer agenda form. There will likely be “fractioning” of the movement, if it can be said to be organised enough for there to be fractions occurring. Even the thought leaders of Davos have realized this is a serious societal issue of significant scale across multiple countries. We suspect the Occupy Movement to be a significant indicator towards a demand for greater change within current political systems.

Check Out Some of the Tweets Still Going On...in a small eastern Canadian city:

Topics at #HMarathon2012 in Halifax: #OccupyNS #ows #Occupy Together, + St Pats Alexandra: displacement & development. http://www.ckdu.ca/index.html

— CKDU news ·
