Although millions of dollars were involved in lobbying for the SOPA bill, the American people's voices were more powerful than the entertainment industry. While piracy is a serious issue in the United States, this controversial bill would have restricted internet freedom.

The defeat of the SOPA bill is being called a "historic victory" according to many tech websites such as Mashable and PC World. 
Some say that victory cannot be fully declared yet because many feel that the issue will come up again in the future.
People banded together to show that they did not support the Stop Online Piracy Act, calling the law a threat to democracy.
The entertainment industry has always been a very powerful force in the United States, but victories such as this one show that everyone can make a difference when planning, coordinating, and speaking out for civil freedoms.  Everyone has a right to petition the government and have their voice heard. The founding fathers knew that these rights were essential to a true democracy. The more people that exercise this right, the more changes will occur in communities, schools, institutions, industries, states. etc.

According to law.cornell.edu, the first amendment of the U.S. constitution protects the rights of American citizens regarding assembly and petition of government to redress grievances.


Petitions have helped create significant change in the United States such as putting an end to slavery and ensuring women can vote, according to whitehouse.gov.

 

Social media has made the petition process less complex and time consuming due to the availability of creating petitions and collecting electronic signatures for various websites.

 

Websites such as change.org, the petition site, and many others are helping people voice their opinions about an issue from the comfort of their own homes.
