No matter a politician's party affiliation or stance on budget issues, nearly all candidates who must campaign here find the literal, tasty political pork of the Iowa State Fair to be an irresistible draw. Politicians almost as hallowed ritual wield either a spatula over the grill at the Pork Tent or fork over a few dollars to purchase a corn dog from a vendor along the Grand Concourse. Newly chosen Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan is scheduled visit the fair today to speak at 1:30 p.m. at The Des Moines Register's soapbox, and others such as Bruce Braley and Chuck Grassley are expected to wander the fairgrounds as well. The big question: What will be this year's politically prudent food of choice? Will candidates trudge all the way up Expo Hill for the new double bacon corn dogs that have been all the rage? In the spirit of our political fair feast, here's a collection of related updates, photos and videos from recent years. I didn't include cheap shots such as the embarrassing photos of candidates in the middle of chomping corn dogs that routinely circulate online. But I've never seen so many politicians wearing aprons in a single Storify.

Last night, for the first time, Harkin sat down to view the "Bully" documentary that largely was filmed in Sioux City. Paul Gausman, superintendent of Sioux City Community Schools, was one of the panelists on hand. Believe it or not, "breastaurant" is valid restaurant industry jargon for a category of suburban eateries that tends to favor Buffalo wings and scantily clad female servers -- inspiring adult feminist revulsion and teen male snickers alike. Even more of a shock, this trend has Iowa roots. The "delightfully tacky, yet unrefined" Hooters chain was launched nearly 30 years ago as the brainchild of natives of wholesome Waverly, Ia., who were inspired by their hometown diner. They launched Hooters in Florida, and it spread to more than 400 locations around the globe. But now the Twin Peaks chain from Texas -- employing a slug of former Hooters executives and trainers for its northern lodge-themed variation -- has opened its 22nd location this week in West Des Moines, Ia., basically around the corner from the local Hooters. (Not to mention that just last month the two chains settled a lawsuit -- see more below.) So my fellow journalist Dan "@newsmanone" Finney -- funnier and snarkier than me, thus a crucial ally for this mission -- joined me to investigate the opening night of Twin Peaks in a state where the Loess Hills qualify as our mountain range. Of course we observed the modern tenets of journalism -- tweeting instead of talking to each other across the table as the corporate Twin Peaks marketing guru gradually caught wind of our guerilla scheme and engaged us. ... And secretly we were hoping that the entire restaurant would have a David Lynch theme.

The fifth annual Record Store Day was celebrated Saturday, April 21, 2012, at more than 700 independently owned shops nationwide -- a feisty circling of the brick-and-mortar music retail wagons in our iTunes era. I'm a lifelong record store junkie. In my early 20s I also enjoyed a part-time gig at a record store (The CD Shoppe in Urbandale, Ia.) to supplement my fledgling journalism career. And I still mourn the loss of numerous other Des Moines metro stores such as Peeples, Archives and Music Circuit. Don't get me wrong: I love Pandora and its Music Genome Project and other online connective music services/apps such as Spotify. But no digital solution thus far for me has replicated the experience of immersion in an actual store. Because what I already like shouldn't always dictate what I'll like next, and recommendations made in person by trusted clerks and strangers alike in the record store aisles have been some of the best. So to paraphrase Dickens, we should honor Record Store Day in our hearts and try to keep it all the year. God bless us, every one; kick out the jams; no sleep till Brooklyn; whatever. Just had to Storify this off my chest ...

Kenneth James Weishuhn Jr. of Primghar, Ia., was a 14-year-old freshman at South O'Brien Community School in nearby Paullina. About a month ago he came out as a gay teen to his family and local community. By all accounts he then was relentlessly bullied by some of his fellow male students both at school and online. In the wee hours of Sunday, April 15, Weishuhn's family discovered that the boy had committed suicide. I sat down with Weishuhn's older sister, Kayla, a sophomore, for an extensive talk about her brother and her account of the events in the last month.
