Jane Addams Hull House Association closed their doors in January 2012, three months shy of the projected March closing date. Although they closed their doors, Addams legacy continues through other outlets.

Jane Addams founded the Jane Addam’s Hull House Association in the 1880s. Every year more than 60,000 people came to the Hull House seeking help and opportunity. The Hull House offered many programs to the public, focusing on women and children. It provided domestic violence counseling, job training, foster care, and after school programs for children among many other things. Addams helped Italian immigrants become settled in their new homes. The association filed bankruptcy and shut down in January of 2012.

Jane Addams Hull House Museum at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) hosted the Jane Addams Children's Book Awards on April 28. Seven books were selected as winners this year. The books are selected based effectively portraying peace, social justice, world community, and equality of sex and races. The awards are held by the Jane Addams Peace Association.

Addams legacy will continue on through organizations she was involved with, and by organizations she inspired to begin. Open Feast is a story-telling series hosted during pot lucks around the world. Abe Epton and Irina Zadov created the series which evolved from a series Zadov was involved with previously. Their mission is similar to Addams mission, which was "Neighbors helping Neighbors."

Mendoza was well-known throughout Pilsen, a neighborhood near the southwest part of Chicago. He touched people's lives through his work which can be found at Cooper Elementary, Orozco Academy, and off the 18th stop on the CTA's pink line.

"[He's a] great friend to the whole world, he didn't have any enemies," said Hector Duarte, a Mexico native and muralist in the Pilsen community. Duarte has been painting murals throughout Chicago since 1978. Duarte returns to Mexico every year to work on an on-going project called the Butterfly Project.

Duarte explained Mendoza as a man who, "gave himself completely to his work." Although Mendoza didn't have a large quantity of murals throughout Chicago, he was popular among the community. Mendoza was a teacher at Orozco Elementary. "He wasn't able to produce as much [murals]. His legacy of work was with teaching," said Duarte.

International Women's Day Celebration held at Union League Club in Chicago

More than 200 people gathered at the Union League Club in Chicago to celebrate International Women’s Day on Thursday. The event was organized by the International Trade Club, WorldChicago, and also the Union League Club of Chicago. It was the 11th annual gathering of women leaders.

Jeanette Kreston is a member of the Musician's Club of Women. Musicians Club of Women has been around since 1875. The Club promotes women musicians through scholarship programs and performance opportunities.

“(International Women's Day) highlights the importance of issues of many women especially, I think, the more people talk about [the issues], the more people will realize women have special problems and need special solutions,” said Bauer, shown above standing at her booth at Union League Club in Chicago on Thursday.

The event included many different organizations, and many set up booths on the second floor of the Union League Club.

Recognizing women means something different for each organization. A wide range of organizations like the League of Women Voters of Chicago, Niagra Foundation, and Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness attended the fair.

Diversity of the booths was a big reason why Emily Smith, representative for Chicagoland Commercial Real Estate, had a booth set up. Smith believes that the other organizations have the potential to become good affiliate partners for them.

Sarah Robb O’Hagan, President of Gatorade North America and global chief marketing officer of Sports Nutrition of PepsiCo, was the keynote speaker this year at the event.

International Women’s Day is recognized in some countries as a holiday.

Social media was buzzing with celebration and support for women as it began trending worldwide Thursday morning.

CPS Adds 90 Minutes to School Day

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) throughout the city has announced they will be extending the school day for all ages. The additional two weeks and 90 minutes is geared towards extra instructional time, which is aimed at improving core education and enrichment activities.

The additional 90 minutes also helps teachers prepare for their students. This will let teachers have more time to plan activities for their class as well as have one-on-one time with students who need to seek extra help. According to a recent survey that was done, 69 percent of teachers said they didn't have enough instructional time to adequately meet their students needs.

William Balfour met before a judge Feb. 23 for his charges in the killing of celebrity Jennifer Hudson's three family members. While nothing new was brought to attention, his trial is set to begin in late April.

Balfour is also facing home invasion and aggravated kidnapping charges according to the Chicago Tribune.
