News that tech giant Yahoo is buying start-up blogging platform Tumblr drew plenty of comments on social media Monday -- most of them negative.
The biggest worry seems to be that Yahoo, a struggling behemoth looking for new revenue, will stuff Tumblr with ads or otherwise ruin the blog site that's drawn a big following, especially among younger people.

Yahoo could probably do without the snark, but it's clearly hoping the social interaction continues.People are at least talking about Yahoo again thanks to CEO Marissa Mayer. The company hasn't had this much buzz since arguably the late 1990s

As many doctors struggle to keep their practices financially sound, some are buckling under money woes and being pushed into bankruptcy.

A recent CNNMoney story about doctors being driven to bankruptcy hit a nerve with readers and ignited robust debate about reasons why. Some empathized with physicians' financial woes. Others said doctors themselves are to blame, or pointed the finger at insurance companies. Here's a sampling of what people had to say:

Some readers said doctors make much less money than people think.

In 2008 my clinic lost 50% of our Account Receivables from patients. Many patients lost their insurance and their jobs when the economy went into a recession, it became worse in 2009.We had to downsize and never recovered.In 2010 the clinic which used to employ 25 people closed and treat over 5000 patients a year closed. The reimbursements continue to fall. Obamacare payments will be similar to Medicaid which is bankrupting most doctors. Our clinic was one of the few which accepted Medicaid. I can not see where the patients with Obamacare could go to get their care. Obamacare is a scam to secure votes and promote the Obamoist cultural revolution. Democrats want to destroy the American economy with their nanny state.

I know more than a few doctors, and trust me, they are not ALL living that high on the hog. In fact I would venture to say, I am making more money driving a truck after all of their bills, taxes and insurance are paid. They don't make the money many of you think they do.

In San Francisco, two years ago my doctor was forced into bankruptcy. He told me that in order to remain solvent he must at least get 50 cents on every dollar billed . He was only getting 35 cents with two doctors working overtime with 30 minutes per patient . He said in order to go on he would need to bring 2 more doctors in and have only 15 minutes per patient .He refused and is now working elsewhere . On the floor where his office was located out of say 15 offices only six were left .
A real shame as these young bright gifted doctors are not able to provide medical care as they wish but are rather controlled by the amount of money they get for billed services . As such the person that knows all of the codes for billing is fast becoming the most important fixture in any medical practice.
Now with the Obama care stuff it will get worse .
Lesson here is to remain healthy , find a good young country doctor that actually cares about his patients and stick with them for life , offering a little more money if that is what it takes to keep them in practice.

Why shouldn't doctors go bankrupt? Restaurants hotels, cleaners, airlines and virtually every other business has bankruptcies. It a doctor mismanages his practice or miscalculates his business volume they should not survive. Most of them make a GREAT living.

A doctors' (all of them) personal greed for money knows no bounds. The incesant need for money is only equalled by their quest for recognition. Greedy narcissists. I worked with many doctors for over two decades and can tell you that many of them are not the brightest bulbs on the marquee when it comes to money, whether personal finance or business. Too many of them have a poor grasp on concepts like overhead and cash flow; others think they are more savvy than they really are and branch out into non-medicine ventures like running a restaurant and get burned big time. They are easy marks for fraudulent investments of all sorts, and there are so many instances of their employees stealing supplies and or cash out from under their noses that whole columns in medical practice magazines have been written on it.

Some readers blamed the insurance industry for doctors' money problems.

The problem with our health care system has always been government involvement as well as insurance. When people do not have the ability to better negotiate prices as well as their insurance being non transferable between states coupled with too much government regulation....you end up with a system that will bankrupt the very ones providing the care.

My nephew tested in the top 1% of all students in the country and he wanted to be a doctor until he got to college and found out what a doctor's life was really like. He picked another major.

Point is, we may lose someone bright enough to cure cancer because of this nonsense and that is just a damned shame.

My wife and I operate a small medical clinic. We are still profitable, but we are watching the margins shrink every year. We will be shutting it down because it is simply not worthwhile to continue in this vein. We are smart enough to find lots of other things to do to support our families. If you think healthcare is tough now, wait a few years. I don't think anyone really has any idea what they have done here....and won't until it is too late. We will keep our DEA license, take care of our children, and probably sell pizzas.

Bill Ackman, who runs Pershing Square Capital Management, has called Herbalife a pyramid scheme, betting $1 billion on the stock falling to zero. On the flip side, Dan Loeb's Third Point took an 8% stake in the company, calling Ackman's claims "preposterous."

Oh snap! but true. The stock has been on a roller coaster ride for months. Anyone remember back in May, when David Einhorn first questioned Herbalife's sales practices? The stock tanked 25% that day ... and that was just on questions. UPS had investors feeling brown and blue Tuesday. The shipping giant's profits were lower than expected. Even worse, the company cited economic "uncertainty" as a reason its outlook is not too hot. UPS fell 5% Tuesday and its bad news dragged down shares of FedEx as well.

I'm bummed by the latter's slide since FedEx was my pick for the Best Stocks for 2012 contest over at InvestorPlace. For what it's worth, FedEx is still up year-to-date. UPS is still barely in positive territory too. Five of my colleagues in the contest have picked stocks that are in the red.

But the challenges facing UPS and FedEx are by no means unique though. And while the concerns about "economic uncertainty" may seem like a convenient excuse, businesses around the globe do have legitimate reason to cut back on spending --- which hurts shipping demand at UPS and FedEx.

The problems in Europe are real and there is no solution in sight. Congress is not likely to do businesses any favors by waiting until the last minute to deal with the fiscal cliff of tax hikes and spending cuts. Add it up and there could be more pain ahead for UPS, FedEx and other multinational firms.

It is way too soon to call the Motorola deal a dud. And remember that Google made the move more as a patent play than hardware grab. Nonetheless, it does make you wonder if Google overpaid for the company if it doesn't plan to take advantage of all of Motorola's assets.

Another StockTwits user wondered if Marissa Mayer's departure for the top spot at Yahoo! says something about Google that investors need to be worried about.

Interesting question. With Tim Armstrong leaving for AOL and Sheryl Sandberg going to Facebook, it's worth asking if there is a brain drain at Google. In addition, it seems doubtful that Google was going to match this offer from Yahoo for Mayer.

Now that I've hopefully got you humming the Carly Rae Jepsen feel-good hit of the summer, let's take a look at telephone stocks! Verizon earnings were good but not great. And considering that shares have done really well this year, it's not a huge shock that the stock is selling on the news. AT&T, which reports earnings next week, took a hit too.

Both stocks have been solid performers this year.

Part of it is due to hopes that iPhone and Android sales will continue to sizzle. But Ma Bell and the stock some call Big Red ... although if you ask me the only real Big Reds are this and this ...

... are also doing so well because they offer great yields in a low-rate environment. AT&T and Verizon each pay dividends that yield more than 4%. So it's not really a matter of strong fundamentals, as some on StockTwits pointed out Thursday. Some even worry that Verizon's iPhone sales may be slowing.

It shouldn't be a huge shock that iPhone sales are slowing. It seems that consumers are waiting for the next model (Will it be iPhone 5? "New" iPhone?) to come out sometime later this year. And that may not be a terrible thing for Verizon given that carriers have to sacrifice profit margins to sell the device. Just ask Sprint.

Still, others note that slowing U.S. iPhone shipments may not mean that Apple is in trouble. Remember what happened last quarter? Investors worried because of supposedly weak sales at Verizon and AT&T. And then Apple blew away forecasts.

$VZ is as irrelevant as US sales figures. The growth story with $AAPL is in China. Don't get hung up on VZ, you will miss the big story.

True. But bringing it back to the U.S. telecoms, it does Verizon no good if Apple is selling a lot of iPhones overseas. And some worry that Verizon's stock has run too far too fast

$VZ Here is something that makes no buiseness sense, trading 48 times earnings. Thats 5 times its true value, this will crash for sure.

To be fair, that P/E is a trailing earnings for the past 12 months. Verizon looks more reasonable on a projected earnings basis. Still, it's not cheap at nearly 18 times 2012 earnings forecasts ... especially since earnings are only expected to rise a little more than 10% a year, on average, for the next few years.

So call me maybe? How about never? Can you hear me now?
