Teaching #FAIL

A conversation on Twitter about why we don't write about our failures more as teachers in higher ed.

  1. Saturday nights are clearly a rocking good time for Academics because we get into extensive conversations about teaching, specifically what failure looks like.
  2. Shd we be blogging abt our teaching failures more to contextualize evals & share pedagogical practices? (where's that boone post just read?)
  3. @adelinekoh sounds like a good idea, but also wanting a critical mass of faculty to write about teaching failures
  4. @triproftri @adelinekoh It's such a dicey subject. I've written abt teaching failures often. And as often get severely criticized.
  5. @readywriting but r these criticism of the article based on anxieties propogated by admins & review process?
  6. @readywriting @triproftri @adelinekoh We have a competitive culture of "show no weakness," and it impedes our progress. Who disarms first?
  7. @pannapacker @readywriting @adelinekoh I think some have already started but it's this huge assessment push to ct "success" that's undoing
  8. @triproftri Hard to tell. Partly being called a poor teacher, pity for my Ss, reason why I don't have a TT job,
  9. @triproftri My fav was the criticism that I'd be a better teacher if I spent less time blogging/advocating/etc.
  10. @triproftri I agree. None of us are perfect. #FYCchat is a lot about our weaknesses as teachers and crowdsourcing the solution!
  11. @pannapacker @triproftri @adelinekoh Just saying I think the various teaching chats that take place here on Twitter are a great start.
  12. @readywriting @triproftri @pannapacker do you find many people sharing stories of failure on teaching chats?
  13. @adelinekoh @triproftri @pannapacker We don't use "failure" but certainly things that didn't go well/as planned.
  14. @adelinekoh @triproftri Would love this kind of work on @HybridPed. I think we need to be more vulnerable in our discussions of teaching.
  15. @triproftri @pannapacker @adelinekoh Agreed. Little room for "failure" in our FYC classrooms b/c of common assessments now.
  16. @readywriting @triproftri @pannapacker @jessifer maybe we cld crowdsource stories in an anonymous google spreadsheet, lk the adjunct project
  17. @adelinekoh @readywriting @triproftri @pannapacker Something like this might be more powerful if it weren't anonymous. But am open...
  18. @Jessifer @adelinekoh @readywriting @triproftri @pannapacker Most commenters are helpful/sympathetic. (And for the others: delete!)
  19. Thanks @jbj have loved this abt Profhacker. The best teachers risk spectacular failure. @adelinekoh @readywriting @triproftri @pannapacker
  20. Really admire this post on rocking failure (great for academics) by @briancroxall via @samplereality bit.ly/A4Doa9
