Role of the MLA?

A discussion on Twitter with incoming MLA President Michael Bérubé

  1. @readywriting bit.ly/rMkTD7 MLA does not pub list of insts that violate acad freedom. AAUP does censure, after on-site investigation.
  2. @readywriting Common misperception about MLA & other scholarly orgs. None of them (AHA, CAA etc.) can do campus investigations & censure.
  3. @MichaelBerube1 Couldn't they, in conjunction w/the AAUP, investigate? Isn't this the most pressing issue we face? Why not devote resources?
  4. @readywriting But how wd that work? MLA (and who precisely?) investigates AF violations in lang/lit depts, AHA in History, AAA in Anth etc?
  5. @MichaelBerube1 Why not? I know that resources are finite, but if this is a priority, then we need to investigate and name names.
  6. @MichaelBerube1 We all know it happens even at our own institutions. But we talk around the issue, instead of naming it and addressing it.
  7. @MichaelBerube1 Individuals off the TT don't have the security to speak up. TT faculty are just as scared to critique their schools.
  8. @MichaelBerube1 That leaves groups like the MLA, AAUP, and others (suggestions?) to speak for those of us who can't. Someone has to.
  9. @readywriting Seems there's a category error w/r/t what discipl orgs are. They don't do investigation/enforcement- any more than NCTE does.
  10. @MichaelBerube1 If the role of the org is to promote the disc and the interests of its members, how is this NOT a part of that role?
  11. @MichaelBerube1 But why not? Just because it never has been that way, does it mean it never can be?
  12. @readywriting 1st sugg: join both MLA & AAUP, find out what is/isn't possible and what can be done differently.
  13. @MichaelBerube1 I don't believe anything is "not possible"; We' ve just lacked the will to get it done in the past. History as an excuse.
  14. @MichaelBerube1 I'll join, as long as the orgs can prove they'll actually take action do something beyond a report.
  15. @readywriting Here's what MLA did in resp to Garcetti, the most important AF S.Ct. case in years. Help us get word out: tiny.cc/vriis
  16. @MichaelBerube1 How does this help contingent faculty who can be summarily dismissed regardless of what the Supreme Court says?
  17. @MichaelBerube1 I'm not saying that the MLA hasn't done imp work; I'm saying they are missing an opp to do even MORE.
  18. @readywriting That's not a report- it's abt revising fac handbooks' AF guidelines. Every fac member needs to know this. tiny.cc/9rnao
  19. @readywriting S.Ct. _eroded_ AF protections- this affects all faculty, NTT fac especially. Only fallback now is revising fac handbooks.
  20. @readywriting One more thing for now- check out tiny.cc/x1z8m. More essential reading for all fac, esp Reg 13 wrt p/t fac appts.
  21. @MichaelBerube1 We revise handbooks, but how does that improve working conditions for contingent faculty or restore TT positions?
  22. @MichaelBerube1 Not to mention that if tenure isn't necessary for academic freedom, why have it at all?
  23. @readywriting Improves wkg conditions by ensuring AF protection and due process. But doesn't restore TT positions, no. Different battle.
  24. @MichaelBerube1 If the ranks of TT made up maj of #highered again, these battles would be easier to win b/c we would be back in control.
  25. @readywriting Point taken, and 1 of my tasks as MLA pres will be wkg w/AAUP et al to do more. Right now, back to grading papers--
