Reimbursement for Conferences

How can we, as graduate students, contingent faculty, and junior faculty afford to pay up front for conferences? Can we afford not to?

  1. Because I have a conference before the next paycheck, this week is: let's eat everything in the house instead of doing groceries weeks.
  2. Yes rt @readywriting: I have a conference before next paycheck, this week is: let's eat everything in house instead of doing groceries weeks
  3. @tressiemcphd Such a pain in the butt. The money will get reimbursed, but until then...
  4. The reimbursement hustle is real rt @readywriting: @tressiemcphd Such a pain in the butt. The money will get reimbursed, but until then...”
  5. .@readywriting I'm still waiting on my reimbursement for Canada. It's a game: will it get here b4 credit card is due?
  6. @tressiemcphd Exactly. I'm still waiting for $$ I was "guarenteed" for my mentoring visits.
  7. “SO MUCH easier!! @tressiemcphd: Yes rt @readywriting: this week is: let's eat everything in house instead of doing groceries week”
  8. @tressiemcphd @readywriting i hate this about working for a univ. i travel a lot and am constantly carrying a balance on my cc.
  9. @mylifeasprose @readywriting I know people have written about it but it's lingering consequence of college elitism
  10. @tressiemcphd @readywriting so far in 2012, added interest i pay is at least an extra $200. that won't be reimbursed. alt is a cash advance.
  11. .@mylifeasprose @readywriting I've had peers to ashamed to admit to their dept that they don't have a credit card. Faculty can't imagine
  12. @tressiemcphd @readywriting meanwhile, that's a responsible fiscal decision for someone living at poverty level (aka grad student).
  13. .@mylifeasprose @readywriting I tell people not to be ashamed to admit you can't afford something in grad school. Nothing to be ashamed of.
  14. If you're in school with better off peers realize that they started off with more...but you both ended up at same destination. Be proud.
  15. & speak up: "I'd love to do that but I don't have $1500. Is that the only way to take advantage of this opportunity?"
  16. Most of these people have never thought about a budget or they haven't thought of one in 30 years.
  17. The assumptions are so ingrained they've never articulated that they're asking you to PAY for an opportunity.
  18. Asking it that way at least forces them to say, aloud, "Oh, yes, paying $1500 IS the only way to have this opportunity."
  19. At least, that's what I do. But y'all know I'm crazy soooo...YMMV
  20. @readywriting @tressiemcphd I'm faculty; two week lag between expense and reimbursement is hard. Used cred cards in grad school, none now.
  21. @terfle @readywriting I feel your pain. I'd kill for a 2 week lag. Draconian changes to travel policy in name of "cost-saving' means months
  22. @tressiemcphd the assumption that you can afford it if you try hard enough sucks. some of us are already sacrificing a lot to just be there.
  23. @tressiemcphd Oh my. That sucks. This is why academics graduate with credit card as well as student loan debt.
