What's transmedia?

At SXSW, one of the topics of conversation was 'what is transmedia'. This is a twitter conversation about what it means

  1. vpisteve
Enough! #Transmedia as it's popularly (wrongly) used today is simply re-labeling a common pre-existing thing. Transmedia=Dihydrogen Monoxide

Telling ONE story on multiple platforms is NOT the same as telling many stories in the same universe on multiple platforms...

#Transmedia SHOULD mean ONE SINGLE story on multiple platforms, not MANY stories in the same story world on many platforms

@vpisteve that doesn't seem like a very solid dividing line - by this defn, wouldn't movies and novelizations count as transmedia?

@bscofield to clarify, it's not telling the same story on different platforms, it's one story spread across platforms

@vpisteve sure, but the spread is a tricky bit. how much overlap of content/viewpoint/story do we allow before saying it's not transmedia?

@vpisteve when you say "spread" do you mean parts of the story are consumed per platform or told in different ways per platform. Both?

@vpisteve i would argue that transmedia really isn't new at all; it's the secularization of old paradigms open to new possibilities via tech

@vpisteve i think it is really hard to define a single story (I see your point) but in transmedia i think its much harder to define

@vpisteve how about we let the franchisers keep the term #transmedia which will go to the grave with cyberspace & we find something better

@vpisteve Franchising sounds biz oriented and it can result in messy continuity 2 be polite. Transmedia franchise = consistent storyworld...

@tara I think audience participation/touching the story is a separate element, not limited to one or the other

@geoffreylong And since when does transmedia automatically include games and ARGs? Seems like concepts have become intertwined.

@Tara Actually, that's a GREAT point. ARE all ARGs transmedia? It depends on how narrowly you define media. Hey @vpisteve - monomedia ARGs?

@Sarn @vpisteve @thebruce0 This is why I'm so adamant that we not conflate ARGs with transmedia - all ARGS are tm, but not all tm is an ARG.

@Sarn @vpisteve @thebruce0 Issue is that 'transmedia' is NOT A NOUN. It's an ADJECTIVE. If anything, it's short for 'transmedia experience'.

@vpisteve Transmedia is currently way too broad, sure. But,how would you define Star Wars or Matrix (used @henryjenkins as core examples) ?

@Sarn Personally, I would disagree with @henryjenkins on his definition if he didn't come up with it himself ;)

@Sarn @vpisteve But @henryjenkins didn't invent the term. Neither did @Jeff_Gomez. Marsha Kinder did, in 1993's PLAYING WITH POWER.

@lksriv Is also totally right. Transmedia experiences don't require interactivity any more than they require passivity. Transmedia ≠ games.

@Sarn his is even a little too broad for my taste as well. Star wars, no. Matrix, maybe. But neither require… (cont) http://deck.ly/~UGJtC
