Academic Careers & Privilege (July 2, 2011)

I find it curious some calls aren't shy about detailing all you'll have to be & do, but don't tell you what it is exactly you'll get.

@qui_oui calls for applications, etc. It's assumed we're all benefited from working extra for no extra pay. Not everyone's case.

@ernestopriego Yes, I notice that's the way academic work seems to be, much of the time...as a grad student, anyway.

@qui_oui yup. There's a need for a new paradigm in academia. People outside academia are quick to notice how unfair it is.

@ernestopriego Sometimes I feel the university is the system that least values my education, credentials and skills-!

@qui_oui main problem is there's always someone who benefits financially. The rest are supposed to work very hard just for the 'fame'.

@ernestopriego Yes, we also get used to working for nothing. it's terrible conditioning for work outside the university as well!

@ernestopriego Within the logic of the system, our time & effort are significantly under-valued. That's my biggest realisation of last 2 yrs

@ernestopriego ...well, the biggest thing that's really "sunk in" in a real way. It will affect my post-PhD choices for sure.

@qui_oui indeed! But most people don't say it out loud. It's assumed as a natural thing, like the weather. Drives me nuts.

@qui_oui please do. I should do too. Reality is, those who have afforded to work for free will get jobs. The vicious circle is maddening.

@ernestopriego Yes! That's how privilege is perpetuated in grad school. The conference system alone is ridiculous for grad students.

@ernestopriego I'm doing a careers course right now where the message is totally different. More like "you can do almost anything you want"

@qui_oui indeed, but also for international early career academics. It is the violence of the unsaid... privilege remains systematic

@ernestopriego do you mind if I "cite" your tweet? I just starting writing a blog post immediately, LOL

@ernestopriego Yes, early career academics as well. No conferences, no travel, no grants, no promotion... no guarantees.

@martin_eve @ernestopriego Every time I explain conferences to my mother, she says "when are they going to start paying you to do this" ;-)

@qui_oui your mum is so right. It's what everyone, including my wife (and my creditors) keep asking me...

@qui_oui @martin_eve @ernestopriego Many of my colleagues in my office are shocked I pay my own way. Perhaps I should be shocked, too!
