Re: Lena Dunham's 'fundamentalist attitude'

I called out Lena Dunham for captioning a photo of herself in a headscarf with "I had a real goth/fundamentalist attitude when I woke up from my nap." I went on to explain why it was ignorant and she understood and apologized. The following is that exchange plus related commentary.

  1. think you meant ignorant/racist RT @lenadunham I had a real goth/fundamentalist attitude when I woke up from my nap instagr.am/p/OFtmgZi1NW/
  2. RT @lenadunham sorry if you thought my TwitPic of my burka-esque headgear was offensive but I am still going as Isabel Adjani for Halloween
  3. "burqa-esque headgear" smh wow guess ignorance is the new 'quirky sundress' for white Girls
  4. A rare genuine one- been in production and completely not reading the news. Didn't realize what a bad time it was to make a joke like that
  5. never a good time to 'play ethnic', regardless of ongoing violence against the people you're making fun of @lenadunham
  6. Not a good excuse you guys, but an excuse nonetheless. I'm glad you keep me informed and I'm deleting those tweets.
  7. this is not an apology RT @lenadunham Not a good excuse you guys, but an excuse nonetheless.
  8. by the way, I've worn a scarf on my head like that, do you think I'm a 'fundamentalist'? or just goth @lenadunham
  9. wearing a scarf loosely over your head has nothing to do w burqas or fundamentalism but way to judge ppl based on what they wear @lenadunham
  10. maybe the cast of Girls will wear 'burqa-esque headgear' it'll be so #talibanchic @lenadunham too bad there are no ethnics in NY to help out
  11. or at least *a* voice of the oblivious white privilege required to be this casually racist http://pic.twitter.com/pP6naQoS
  12. yo @lenadunham who wears 'burqa-esque headgear' I've never heard of it, is it a white people thing?
  13. .@derftron no just mad at how a look 'certain people' get attacked/maligned/murdered for could be a joke to @lenadunham or anyone else
  14. 'im sorry if you took offense' is not a real apology bc it refuses to acknowledge that something was in fact offensive @lenadunham
  15. The subjectivity of offensiveness is irrelevant, it's about respecting someone's identity and experience.
  16. @pushinghoops You're totally right. It was dumb/careless on like 19 levels and I appreciate the illuminating words/the dialogue.
  17. if ur uncomfortable w being called a racist instead of getting angry simply apologize for/acknowlege the racism, presto no longer racist!
  18. dear white people still upset I pointed out racism, even @lenadunham is on my side now, don't be so sensitive ; )
  19. .@MarkOosterveen why is it important to u that I not be offended by something offensive? why must it be simply 'unfunny' rather than racist
  20. .@MarkOosterveen since my religion has been racialized post 9-11 there is no real difference when it comes to the offensive language
  21. insulting muslims is racist bc Islam has been racialized, no one ever means Indonesians (largest muslim pop.) when they say 'muslim world'
  22. the racialization of Islam is why an irrational fear of Muslims gets any brown person (hindu, sikh, etc.) attacked not just muslims
  23. .@daralaine the part where simply donning a head scarf, as woman around the world are wont to do, is 'fundamentalist'
