Media Art Techniques SY2016-17 Art Criticism

Describe, analyze, and interpret your finished projects for MPSA Media Art Techniques.

  1. A digital painting of a scene from Nightcrawler, mainly focusing on Lou Bloom. The image uses both very vibrant warm and cool colors contrasting against each other to represent the neon (for the lack of a better word) aesthetic of the film. The image also has a vignette applied to it to draw attention to the center of the image. The heat in the background represents Lou's ulterior motives. It's ominous, just like him. #MAT2016 #midpacific #youthmediaart #mpsa

  2. A digital painting of a scene from the social network, mainly focusing on Mark Zuckerberg. The image has a fairly muted color tone. The colors used represent the solemness of Zuckerberg in this scene (he is in the middle of a lawsuit which he sees as unjust). The light and dark contrast of the background represent the clashing of ideas in his mind. He knows he is guilty, yet he still thinks he does not owe any restitutions. #MAT2016 #midpacific #youthmediaart #mpsa

  3. A digital painting of a scene from whiplash, mainly focusing on Andrew Neiman preparing to play his drums after getting in a car accident. Raw sketch lines are placed over colors with painterly shading. The background is blurred to bring focus to Andrew and a vignette is applied. The jaggedness of the outlines represents how distraught Andrew is in this moment. He is making illogical decisions and as a result he is a total mess. His face is expressionless, representing how unwilling he is to be deterred from his goal. #mpsa #youthmediaart #midpacific #MAT2016

Brave child and timid child go on an adventure in the woods and the danger ensues. This is the first comic page that features the two boys meeting.
I thought that this image demonstrated how the original series of panels was transformed into a comic. The two panels on the bottom were not in an original piece.
This piece conveys how I was experimenting with panel structure and the results of it. The organization of the panels is related to the main character's emotions. On the bottom, he is feeling sad at first, so the panel is in a downward position and when he's surprised, it's in a more upraised position.

  5. A short, soundless comic centered around two boys who are having adventuring through the forest. This scene is where the seemingly more adventurous boy becomes frightened by something in the forest.
In the overall image, I like how the acrylic background does not contrast too sharply with the digital foreground. The layers in the acrylic give the image more depth and I think that it was a good idea to draw with acrylic rather than watercolor for this piece.
When creating the drawing, I was focusing on the symbolism in the borders around the comic panel. The swirly, organic white sketches are meant to show that the scene is mostly calm and peaceful. The rigid edges around the second image convey that something bad is going to happen.

  6. A short, wordless comic that follows the misadventures of two young children. A boy becomes scared by a lizard monster.

This image helps has in it part of the flaws of my project. The character designs are sometimes inconsistent. The Xshaped scar switches sides on the boy's face between various pages. Other than that, I like the blur effect in the first panel and the unique set up for the lizard monster in relation to the panels.
The blurred background in the first image is meant to convey that something quick or exciting will happen. It is also conveys a confusion of emotions.

  7. 1. This project shows my conceptual and technical growth/improvement, because of the fact that it is along the lines of the very first project I did (freeze action). Furthermore, not only have I chose to do the same project so that I can compare my work, but I also made it twice as hard, as I limited myself of any high tech lighting systems and instead used a basic stage light. Compared to my very first project, my quality of photo was the same if not higher while limiting my resources, and I was thus able to inquire/portray all the technical skills I learned throughout the year.

2. My successes were the beneficial outcomes of my projects such as gained experience and knowledge in the skill of photography. One challenge I faced during his semester was the limited amount of light I ended up using because of the resources I let myself be available to. Was I chose to deal with that was by simply either adding more natural light to my photos, or simply adjusting my camera to a higher ISO even if the quality of my photo dropped. Another difficulty I faced while completing the last project consisted of focusing. For example, in a dark environment needed to take freeze action photography in, I wasn't able to focus all the time, and had to constantly stop, turn the lights on, and focus for almost every shot. I could have approached these problems in many different ways, but if I had the chance to, I wouldn't approach it way than I did, because of the learning benefits I got through my trial and error.

3. I loved the way we did things this year in MPSA and wouldn't have asked for a better first year.

  8. My project is based on freeze action photography, without the use of expensive flashes. The goal of this project was to use nothing but a small stage light to lighten both the background and fore ground of a high speed photo. I was inspired by a YouTube channel called Adriana Tv which tried to prove it wrong, but ultimately failed as they concluded that using the expensive flashes are more beneficial. @pueodigital #midpacific #mpsa #MAT2016 #youthmediaart

  9. While completing this project, I learned that with the minimal amount of light being used, it made it very difficult to both focus and use the right settings to create a high quality photo. I used an 85 mm lens which had an F-stop all ur way down to 1.4 and yet I was still having problems as it would prove to be too dark in a lot of the test photos I shot. For example, I realized that in order to have most of the bulb in focus, I needed to have a higher F-stop, but was not able to because of the lack of light. So I ended up having to lower the quality of my photo (ISO) to get it more in focus. @pueodigital #midpacific #mpsa #MAT2016 #youthmediaart

  10. I interpreted this experiment to be both a success and failure. For example, it was a very good experience for me to be able to adjust my settings to the best photo I could get, and that ended with me being able to get high quality shots that I really liked. I can conclude that with the amount of light being used, this project came out to be a success as I have now proved that you do not need any expensive flashes/gear in order to get a high quality freeze action shot. @pueodigital #midpacific #mpsa #MAT2016 #youthmediaart

  11. My project was about exploring the island not as a tourist but as a local. There is a lot of blue and I wanted to depict the hue because we are as an island surrounded by it. This picture is symbolic to the island because we are in water and then we are surrounded by even more water as seen in this picture.

  12. The image is 3D rendered with a bit of touching up done in Photoshop. It depicts a singular plant in a dimly lit blue room. The plant is in a box and there are multiple other empty boxes behind it. The blue-purple light gives a solemn and somewhat artificial look to the image. The repetitious use of the boxes emphasizes the importance of the most prominent one with the plant. The plant is the only thing in the image not completely blue so it contrasts. A shallow depth of field is also present which draws attention to the plant. The meaning behind this image is that this plant is in some sort of science lab and is the only living plant. The empty containers are supposed to represent dead or unsuccessful plants. #midpacific #mpsa #MAT2016 #youthmediaart

  13. For my final project I was attempting to do portrait photography. For this project I would go out with some people and try to understand and learn the ways to portraits. The only thing I knew about portraits was that most of the time the pictures were shallow depth of field. So I used a 50mm f1.4 to try get most of the background blurry. I found that the best setting to use is f2.8 because it gets the models in focus but the background still out of focus. So the pathway they are standing on is kind of aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It gives the eye somewhere to look. I have been taking mostly landscape photos since I bought the camera so switching to portrait photography was a Huge leap. I had the challenger of talking to the model and telling them how to stand so that's why this picture is so unorganized, I used this pictures when they weren't ready because it kinda showed the progression in my skill for portrait photography. #midpacific #mpsa #MAT2016 #youthmediaart

  14. As a senior media art student, I decided to use one of my final projects as an opportunity to recreate work I've done in my beginner years. One of the first projects I did in digital photography was long exposure freeway lights. It did not turn out as I had hoped because I didn't know the basics of photography yet so something like long exposure while still maintaining composition and other crucial elements was beyond my skill level at the time.
The second piece is a simple depth of field piece now that I grasps the concept a little more. The final piece is portrait of my dog, which is one of the things I've become known for over the years, my animal portraits. Before I just shot shallow depth of field pictures of my animals and thought they were the greatest things ever, but over the years I learned there is so much more than depth of field and showcase this in the last piece with strong use of shadows, depth of field, contrast, and composition.

  15. Overall, I am very pleased with how this project turned out. There is a real sense of improvement in my ability over the past few years and the work I am able to put out now shows for it. I am proud to be a Media Art Senior representing Mid-Pacific with the level of work I am able to present today. #mpsa #midpacific #MAT2016 #youthmediaart @pueodigital

  16. Looking at these photos in a portfolio sense, the similarities are that they're all taken during the night and utilize lighting as a crucial element to focus on. In the freeway photo, it uses long exposure to create lines that are unable to be seen through the human eye, they flow through the photo, from the bottom right to the top left (or vice versa) to show direction and a sense of flow. The Christmas tree photo uses the contrast to bring out the lights, this photo was meant to look simple while maintaining aesthetics. The last photo bring the portrait of my dog, it uses shadows well by covering half the face leaving one eye in the dark. This adds a sense of mystery behind it because one of the five senses are covered. This along with the boque effect in the background leads to this being one of my stronger pieces.

  17. Overall project involves itself with a variety of contrast. The first painting of the owl uses color and textures as it's form of contrast. It has soft areas and rough parts, as if it was drawn on a traditional canvas. The second painting uses textured painting and smooth, lineless work. The first painting is a digital painting but has sections where it's textured. It also uses color as a major contrast. The plants are brighter and the owl blends into the background, but it's golden eyes allows it to stand out. I interpret it as a symbol of knowledge but not in the exactly literal sense. Owls do represent knowledge, but the way the owl blends in with the plants can symbolize how knowledge isn't always obvious, but remains hidden until it needs to be revealed. The second painting uses mainly pink and purple shades to make it seem ethereal rather than literal. It's a very warm piece, despite being in a water like scene. I interpret the second painting as dreams, as in one's goal. Someone's goal can be given up, and drown but the dream doesn't truly die, but it travels elsewhere.

  18. #mat2016 I have had successes with the programming side of things. As I went through it, it became easier. Then, towards the end, when I had to implement textures and assign mesh renderers, it became really complicated and hard to get through. I think that while doing projects like this, I need to do small projects in between so I can prevent myself from hitting my head against a wall.

  20. It has an odd shape which I can't tell what it is but it is threaded with small lops in it. It looks like blood cells. It's thicker in the middle with a little bit of orange and the outside is more sparse.

Is the red just a representation of a heightened density of the white or is it something else?

1) why does the painting go from dark to light colors? 2) is this supposed to represent how life works, like sometimes you are super busy and sometimes you have nothing to do? 3) do the lines and directions of the lines have to do with anything?

  25. Pictures of the ocean are constantly projected across the walls and watercolor is overlaid over it. The videos blur into one another and it sounds like there are faint sounds of the ocean. The changing images and the unsteady camera makes me feel dizzy. This dizzy feeling could be related to how one feels when they are diving underwater. When you are underwater, a person feels disoriented. However, it has a calming feeling. I feel like this installation could be made better if the artist incorporated all of the senses.
1. Why did the author choose to use images of the ocean and mountains?
2. How did the color choices in the water color pieces match the installation?
3. Were the shadows intentional?
