K-PAX: medicalized others

A story from a livetweeting of the film K-PAX, part of Social/Science/Fiction Summer 2012, SIS, American University.

  1. How do we deal with the potentially alien other? One way is to assume he's crazy, and look for a way to cure him of his obvious delusion. Maybe dramatic, maybe subtle, but always therapeutic.
  2. Superior being with vast wisdom on earth is ok simply hanging out in a psych ward? His choice? Why? #ptjssf
  3. interesting that the movie starts out with two types of "other"- apparent mental illness and socioeconomic situation #ptjssf
  4. "Let's hope extraterrestrials qualify for Medicaid.""You think I'm crazy.""I prefer the term ill." The medicalizing of abnormality. #ptjssf
  5. Jeff Bridges is still treating him as a psych case. Light, unintrusive line of questioning. No attempts to poke holes in his story. #ptjssf
  6. Hard to maintain the boundaries between sanity and insanity when the "delusion" appears so compelling.
  7. We're obviously all rooting for him in the planetarium. I wonder how this would change if he didn't look human. A threat? #ptjssf
  8. love that one of the orderlies wrote a essay for Prot to read! Who's sane, who's insane? #ptjssf
  9. The patient as therapist. Listening to the alien instead of trying to cure him.
  10. no reason Prot couldn't manufacture a life on earth because it's what the Doc needs to hear. #ptjssf
  11. Doctors are only doctors if we treat them like doctors. Average people are only average if we think of them as so. Perception #ptjssf
  12. @Tulililli doctor, patient -- what an interesting distinction. We don't have that on K-PAX. #ptjssf
  13. @profptj "Doctors become patients and vice versa" it reminds me Patch Adams...that is not alien movie though... #ptjssf
  14. Who was cured, in the end? And what were they cured of?
