Follow these easy precautions below when anxiously heading out to the lake or ocean: 

Make sure you are using a car that has 4-wheel drive when maneuvering a boat.  Especially in areas that are mountainous it is important to have as much horsepower as possible.  Ensure that the tow is secured on your truck or SUV, so the boat does not accidentally dispatch.  When traveling up and down hills it is very important that the tow is hinged properly for your safety and for the safety of those driving behind you.

Check to see if the weight of the boat is distributed correctly on the tow behind the car.  60 percent of the boat's weight should be positioned on the front half of the trailer and 40 percent in the rear.  Make sure the boat is also centered on the tow.  This means less of a chance that the boat will tilt or roll over during its transport.  

Focus time on double-checking that mechanisms are working up to par. Check to see if your tow is in sync with the car and that the blinkers are working with your car.  This way you will be prepared in the event something is not working correctly.  You should also adjust your mirrors to the length of the boat instead of the traditional length of your vehicle.  

When driving with the trailer have a second set of eyes to guide you.  This is vital if it is one of your first times driving with the boat or something of its size.  If you need to back out of a tight space have a passenger jump out of the car and direct you around any obstructions or tight corners.  Once on the road allow ample room for braking.  It will take you longer to slow down and if you have to make sudden stops you are more likely to have issues with the boat shaking or even becoming loose.  Take note that your vehicle will not be able to speed up as quickly as it normally would due to the extra weight.  Drive in a slower lane so other drivers can pass and use caution around your tow.
