Special Exhibit Paintings by Diné—Navajo artist Quincy Tahoma - Adobe Gallery, Santa Fe
The Special Exhibit "Paintings by Quincy Tahoma" will officially open at Adobe Gallery with a reception on Thursday, August 18th, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This Special Exhibit runs through August 17th. It was while at Santa Fe Indian School, Quincy Tahoma, Diné-Navajo (1920-1956) developed his unique painting style.- Never been to Indian Market? Check out the amazing number of events.
- There is even a fashion show.
- Only tribal members can participate in the booths around the Plaza at Santa Fe, but you can see and buy Quincy Tahoma: The Life and Legacy of a Navajo Artist at the book booth near the Plaza. We write about an artist who lived from 1917-1956. He participated in and won awards in many juried shows during his lifetime, such as the Gallup Ceremonial, the Philbrook in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But the Santa Fe Indian Market did not have painting categories when he was at his height as an artist. Come to Santa Fe and see what Tahoma missed.
Charnell and I will take advantage of the opportunity to see some of the people who contributed stories about Tahoma and allowed us to use images of his art in our book. We are hoping to see anthropologist and Navajo expert David Brugge who wrote the foreword for our book.
Since Tahoma lived most of his life in Santa Fe, many of his old friends will be present--either in person or in their art.
We'll chat with Ramos Sanchez of San Ildefonso Pueblo, who will be selling his paintings. And we'll take a look at the sculptures of Alan Houser, who was a friend of Tahoma's from Santa Fe Indian School days. Here's an article about a new installation of Houser's works in Santa Fe.
- And here's a video to introduce Indian Market.
We'd love to meet you between 4 and 7 at Adobe Gallery on Thursday the 18th. To learn more about Tahoma and his art, see the Tahoma web site or the Tahoma blog.
See you in Santa Fe.
