If the Justice Department wants the NCAA to tell them why there's no playoff, I hope the NCAA fires back "well, ask the Supreme Court."

It was the Supreme Court's decision to essentially deregulate negotiations of TV contracts in the mid-1980s that CFB to this point.

want a playoff because the NCAA would be the administrator of it, employing fair-play rules nobody would like.

Imagine if the NCAA Tourney fielded just 16 teams. And, say, Indiana missed it 15 straight times. What would happen to Indiana hoops?

Under a playoff system, Nebraska football would have been relegated to the equivalent of the NIT since 2002.

@swmckewonOWH Bowl system, which would consist of everybody but 8 playoff teams, isn't equivalent of the NIT. Top-10 teams don't play in NIT

If you create a standard "A," standard "B" suddenly becomes less acceptable. Especially if the format of A differs so greatly from B.

@swmckewonOWH We already have Standard A/B. It's BCS games/non-BCS games. Diff is fans would actually care about something other than 1 v. 2

The storyline of every bowl game in a playoff world becomes "Why didn't this team make the playoff? Will they next year?"

I'm not saying CFB shouldn't have a playoff, mind you. I'm saying the definition of "success" changes.

@swmckewonOWH Ur making too big a deal of slight format change. For 90%, wouldn't change perception. For a few, it would IMPROVE perception

@dirkchatelain I think it'd change perception for a good chunk of that 90 percent. Big chunk. Especially if playoff is rooted in equity.

@dirkchatelain @swmckewonOWH as long as the playoff pool is small enough to keep every regular season game meaningful most fans will support

@swmckewonOWH Since when did college coaches have a say in this argument? ... Perception? Job security? CFball big-wigs care about $$$
