Are (some/young/influential) journos dicks? #journodicks
Prompted by an article tweeted by John Thompson, an ongoing Twitter conversation about journalists, dickishness and the relationship between the two.
- Since when did journalists become dicks? (Well, some of us)Jeff Bercovici wrote a great piece for Forbes in response to a survey that ranked being a journalist as the fifth worst job to have in 20...
- Since when did journalists become dicks? (Well, some of us) zite.to/HRU0Qt via @zite
- Some have always been - just more outlets now MT @johncthompson: Since when did (some) journalists become dicks? zite.to/HRU0Qt
- @newsmary @johncthompson piece suggests being a dick equates to being young. Bit unfair. Fair share of old, experienced dicks out there
- @newsmary @johncthompson and the fact that comments are closed in the article...
- @digidickinson @newsmary That is very true. And dicks for a whole host of other reasons too...
- @digidickinson @johncthompson Agreed. Journalists historically haven't tended towards the shy, self-effacing or retiring, for the most part.
- @newsmary @johncthompson it does require a certain brassyness but it's a fine line that's easy to cross in an online world.
- Is there a higher concentration of dick journalists than dicks in the general population?
- @johncthompson @digidickinson @newsmary Perhaps (shock) we just reflect society? #TheBusinessesMightNot
- @mattbuck_hack @digidickinson Suspect we're niche. Newsrooms aren't that diverse, in personality types as much as anything else.
- @mattbuck_hack @johncthompson @newsmary but isn't journo meant to be apart from-free of influence and bias- holding mirror not reflecting :)
- @digidickinson @mattbuck_hack @johncthompson This is where those robot-future-journalists would be handy. #nothowpeoplework
- @newsmary @mattbuck_hack @johncthompson robohacks- thinks something about asimovs three laws and journo regulation might make a blog post :)
- At which point the whole thing got too unwieldy for @ replies and spawned a hashtag.
- More or less agree with @newsmary - people have always been dicks, it's just that now you can see them more publicly. #journodicks
- @JosephStash @newsmary I'd say it's the one of the traits most likely to be linked to journalism tbh
- @journodave @JosephStash @newsmary - And dicks tend to stick together, thus creating a strong 'fraternity of dicks' in the industry.
- @journodave @JosephStash Leading to question: do journos become dicks, or do dicks become journos? #journodicks
- @newsmary @JosephStash Bit of both, though seems to be increase in listicle spurting hipsternalists who don't ever want to piss anyone off
- @newsmary @journodave I think the profession is fairly self-selecting, so dicks become journos in a lot of cases. #journodicks
- @JosephStash @newsmary @TomMcArthur though suppose it is about perception too, one mans dick is another mans #trustedinfluentialjournalist
