Interview with Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray

Newsday reporters met with Murray this morning to talk about issues facing the town, including the fate of Nassau Coliseum. Patrick Whittle shares some of the highlights.

  1. Okay, #Isles fans, @Newsday had a meeting with Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray earlier today. You know what that means - notebook purge!
  2. Asked if she regrets opposing Lighthouse, Murray said: "The answer is no, simply because it was not sustainable." #Isles
  3. "I just can't believe that this piece of property will remain vacant," Murray said. #Isles
  4. Murray again touted Hempstead zoning plan for Coliseum site. "Almost everything under the sun is allowable basically as of right." #Isles
  5. "We're saying, developers, have at it," Murray said. #Isles
  6. Murray said Hempstead has "entertained developers recently" and they "expressed real hope." #Isles
  7. Murray declined to name the developers but implied they are name-brand players. #Isles
  8. The developers expressed that the zoning options were "a highly unusual, happy thing," said Murray. #Isles
  9. Murray said the developers have been in essentially to review Hempstead zoning options for Coliseum site. #Isles
  10. Murray described herself as "very, very hopeful that a developer - or developers - will step up." #Isles
  11. But she also made clear that "it all ends up and rests with the county." #Isles
  12. Murray added that town can't "approve developments on [their] wish lists," which is why Lighthouse failed. #Isles
  13. She described herself as "not privy to any conversations with Mr. Wang and Mr. Mangano." #Isles
  14. She said Nassau, as landowner, "has to be the visionary," which is something she has said before. #Isles
  15. Robert Brodsky, ever the needler, asked how she feels about being perceived as villain by #Isles fans.
  16. Said: "Emotions run high.There's always going to be fans who say, 'I don't care what goes there. I just want the Islanders to stay'." #Isles
  17. "The driving emotion was we need a new Coliseum because we want to keep our Islanders," Murray said. #Isles
  18. "The bottom line that Kate Murray and the board blocked the Islanders, that is absolutely inaccurate," she said. #Isles
  19. She defended opposition to Lighthouse as "not an ideological conclusion." #Isles
  20. Murray called Coliseum site "wholly unique piece of propertY." Touted "greatest density Hempstead has even approved" via new zoning. #Isles
  21. Regarding the mystery developers, Murray said "what they wanted was a primer. They want to get a primer on what they can do." #Isles
  22. Brodsky, needling again, asked if developers assume arena will be part of property. "I don't think they verbalized that," KM said. #Isles
  23. "A lot of them just talked casually," Murray said of inquiring developers re: Coliseum. #Isles
  24. Asked if the arena has to be a piece of a redeveloped Coliseum site, Murray said: "That ends up with discussions between ..." #Isles
