#NAHJ Board Bans Tweeting Of Meeting?

Last night on the eve of UNITY12, I saw an interesting thread on the NAHJ Strategy Group Facebook fan page. it was reported that #UNITY12 student journalists were told that the board meeting could not be Tweeted or filmed. Here's how it played out.

  1. I began live Tweeting #NABJ board meetings in October 2010 after concerns about the timeliness of the minutes being posted.  Scroll down to see Richard Prince's post on my efforts.
  2. Catch up on what's going on with @NLGJA by following @Brizahn, who is livetweeting from the meeting. #UNITYnews #UNITY12
  3. Why was a student reporter pushed out of the #NAHJ board meeting when it was not in executive session? #electnahj12
  4. #Unity2012 Already a controversy: Unity student news project says one of their reporters barred from tweeting @NAHJ board mtg
  5. Finally let me in the meeting, apparently no tweeting and no filming are allowed at the @NAHJSouthFL meeting #unitynews #unity12
  6. Sitting in the hallway waiting to interview the board members since I was just told to leave the @NAHJSouthFL meeting #unity12 #unitynews
  7. What is @NAHJSouthFL hiding? Why did they make me leave the so called "open meeting" ? We'll here from the board soon #unitynews #unity12
  8. They made me leave right when started talking about elections...I wonder why...Why @NAHJSouthFL ? #unitynews #unity12
  9. . @joenewsman got kicked out of the "open" @NAHJ board meeting for filming. But he still got some footage! #unitynews #unity12
  10. @joenewsman sorry about that BS from the board meeting. I didn't even get to tell u hi! Glad u r doing projects w/ students
  11. Not learning squat sitting in the Mandalay hallway, thank @NAHJSouthFL for making me leave the meeting #unitynews #unity12
  12. Just spoke with @rebeccaaguilar she shared her thoughts on me getting kicked out of the meeting #unitynews #unity12
  13. Was interrupted by @NAHJ president while interviewing @rebeccaaguilar that's journalism for you! #unitynews #unity12 http://pic.twitter.com/Uesm4UKp
  14. I'm not trying to get into NAHJ's business. But frankly, there is no legitimate reason why a journalism organization, aside from executive sessions, should ban filming or social media from meetings, unless there's something to hide. And that's a bad reason. If you area dues-paying member and the meeting is public, then you have a right to attend and tweet, Facebook, Google+ or whatever other tool you choose to use to reports on it. It looks bad when journalists appear to censor. We don't put up with it when subjects of the stories we cover try and do it, so we shouldn't accept it when a journalism organization does it.  And if I'm wrong about what happened, I'm happy to have a correction from a NAHJ board member.
