Occupy Oakland liveblog 11/2/2011

Two livefeeds to choose from: @OakFoSho's http://bit.ly/v8L2NC and http://bit.ly/um7NDa

  1. The media will give as much coverage to rioters as strikers, @OakFoSho predicts, "but that's just not right. It was a beautiful day." #oo
  2. Some of the riot police are dispersing, to cheers from the protesters. #OO #GeneralStrike
  3. Situation unchanged for now. This might (or might not) go all night.
  4. A man walked by pushing a bicycle yelling "Police are not our enemy!" #OO #GeneralStrike
  5. Police lined up on Broadway are issuing warning of "unlawful assembly" and telling people to walk southbound on Broadway.
  6. Must say it's remarkable watching the #occupyoakland hashtag chatter away in myriad languages. Guess the whole world *is* watching.
  7. From KCBS reporter Chris Filippi:

  8. Loud bangs. People retreat from the plaza as some break windows of City Hall. Vandalism all over. Ppl are pissed about it but can't stop it.
  9. 5 minute warning for plaza raid now, apparently.
  10. Just asked a couple medics if I got tear gassed. Tilt your head back, one immediately said. Then they poured maalox in my eyes. #oo
  11. People are vandalizing the OPD Internal Affairs bldg outside the plaza. Others rush in to try to stop them. #occupyoakland
  12. The air is thick with smoke. My eyes are on fire. Almost lost a contact. Could hardly breathe. Okay now. #occupyoakland
  13. "Jesus Christ, this is not God's way!" a woman exclaims as the fire rages. #occupyoakland twitpic.com/7a7j9u
  14. Police are advancing. I am retreating. People are throwing firecrackers at the police. #occupyoakland
  15. #occupyoakland is barricading 16th and Telegraph with dumpsters in anticipation of police. twitpic.com/7a6ug2
  16. Just was handed a flyer that tells the history of 520 16th Street... #occupyoakland
  17. "The Oakland branch of the Traveler's Aid Society was a govt-funded non-profit that provided aid to homeless ppl in our area..."
  18. "After the govt cut funding to the program the Oakland branch faced foreclosure at the hands of their private leader..."
  19. "We are reclaiming it for the people. It is now open for public use..."
  20. "We welcome the Traveller's Aid Society to resume providing services in this building. Otherwise, we will make it into a library..."
  21. And yes, I do realize I could have just taken a photo of the flyer: twitpic.com/7a6s4n
