Best Practices in Nonprofit Management

A collection of outstanding management ideas and practices from the finalists in The Washington Post 2015 Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management, a program of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement.

  1. Excitement was in the air Thursday morning as many representatives of the DC area's nonprofits made their way to The Washington Post to celebrate the best and brightest management practices among us.
  2. While the award has one "winner" and two "honorable mentions", the real big deal is the opportunity for us to learn from each other, celebrate the fantastic practices, and take home some fresh ideas to strengthen our own nonprofits. The whole sector stands to gain.
  3. So, here are some of the things we learned from these wise leaders in our community!

  4. Evaluation and continuous improvement. It can always be better.
  5. Foster great relationships.
  6. Communicate intentionally. Use the power of stories to reach people's hearts and make a deeper human connection.
  7. Work together with others who have shared or complementary goals.
  8. Build operating reserves! Organizations should have several months' worth of operating expenses in the bank, in cash. Because you never know.
