Does BBC enjoy reporting on decline of local newspapers?

Peter Sands asked the question on a sunny Saturday morning. Newspaper journalists, including current and former editors, tweeted their reply.

  1. Is there future for daily newspapers? bbc.in/KhCszC In case you missed it this was on main BBC News last night. #newspapers
  2. Is it just me or is BBC always happy to 'dance on the grave' of newspapers? bbc.in/KhCszC Going weekly is not the end of print.
  3. Here's the BBC report which has prompted Peter's question
  4. @petersands55: Is BBC always happy to 'dance on grave' of newspapers? bbc.in/KhCszC Yep, it is. And were talking 'Pogo' not 'Line'
  5. @petersands55 Didn't see any grave dancing there, Peter. And as an ex-newspaper hack I'm pleased someone's covering the story.
  6. “@petersands55: Is it just me or is BBC always happy to 'dance on the grave' of newspapers? bbc.in/KhCszC It seems so
  7. @petersands55 They should read why Warren Buffet has just bought 63 regional newspapers in America.
  8. @petersands55 I understand why people feel sad at the loss of a daily, but not the perception that journalism stops once it goes weekly
  9. @petersands55 Thanks for RT, Peter. It is a big loss when a long-established evening paper goes weekly, no matter how publishers spin it.
  10. @petersands55 if local newspapers died it would cause problems for local BBC as that's where they get most of their stories from.
  11. @JonMWelch @petersands55 what fascinated me about @BBCNews report is not how many but how few local papers have been lost in recent years
  12. @paulrobbo1966 @petersands55 As long as people want information there will be a market for those who provide it. Need good print & online
  13. @petersands55 As someone has already said, local BBC wouldn't have any content if local newspapers weren't around...theft of stories, guilty
  14. @petersands55 great stuff: you've got folk talking - hits from all over world for my local rags post show that people DO care #notdeadyet
  15. RT @MeehanMedia: Watched BBC local #newspapers report. bbc.in/LvKe5g Didn't find it unduly negative. Going weekly totally right for smaller dailies.
  16. @petersands55 BBC definitely disproportionately interested in other media's downsizing, but Nick Higham's report at least ends on +ve note
  17. @petersands55 no doubt, which is rich given how thin regional TV news coverage is. The BBC 'Midlands' patch seems to cover half the country.
  18. @petersands55 @ErikPetersen it's a legitimate news story which affects thousands of readers. One of your colleagues said "more will follow"
  19. Here's an interesting diversion from Ian Read in Tunbridge Wells
  20. @petersands55 I notice the Beeb took no responsibility for having created the public expectation that news online should be free.
  21. @iancourier @petersands55 Excellent point and the reason why those who say local papers should have charged for online content were so wrong
  22. @petersands55 BBC have no understanding of the challenges we face and how good we are at meeting them because of their protected position
  23. @petersands55 when @northantset announced weekly plan, BBC journalist tweeted come to BBC for daily news. Showed lack of understanding
