Danny O'Brien's Call to Action

Some things @mala tweeted tonight that I thought deserved not to be lost in the firehose.

  1. we talked, especially his partner, at @aaronsw's funeral about all the others who face our criminal justice system without his advantages
  2. Jennifer Granick's piece here: j.mp/UOSa7H and its sequel should help new activists understand it
  3. @mala I also really liked what Taren said about there being years of injustice in the legal and prison systems #aaronsw
  4. i think "transparency" about America's criminal justice system is the wrong word: it is already invisible, we need to make it tangible
  5. but as ever, want to say it's wrong to concentrate on just America. Bad "cybercrime" law is a tool of oppression everywhere as is bad law.
  6. as a european in US, makes me sad when people complain about US out of knowledge and ignore their own countries' failures out of ignorance
  7. Your country might be as bad! Worse! About to be worse! Dig deeper! Act closer! Need you fighting locally more than you commenting from afar
  8. join @openrightsgroup if in UK, join @thainetizen if in Thailand, If you can't find an org, *found* one. I did. Aaron did. I'll show you how
  9. You have no idea how easy it is to change the world. All it takes is you to note how you already are, and iterate. I AM SERIOUS.
  10. i promised aaron that i would deploy the funny to help save the world, and i sense i may be being A BIT SINCERE right now.
  11. but my friend just died and I just saw Tim Berners-Lee and Cory Doctorow and my daughter and my partner and my ex-wife and my friends crying
  12. and countless lolcat kittens somewhere i guess
  13. but trust me, i am white and male and well-educated and have a mighty beard of authority. if you think you are powerless, i will share mine
  14. but right now we need you. we lost someone, and it's your turn to take his place. you don't need to do anything much but keep living for me.
  15. i should get a blog. a self-hosted blog. made out of freedom.
  16. . @obra yes j.mp/VZjp2E is made of PUREST FREEDOMIUM, aka WordPress, where your words are yours, not Mr Zuck. Right, @photomatt?
  17. . @obra . @obra my own install on my own server, as TEH INTERNETS INTENDED. PREACH IT. Then write a blog program and run it on your phone!
  18. oh did the telcos worry about us running servers on our phones? Did they NAT us, brothers and sisters? Will we STUN them with our services?
  19. it's lucky that 25% of ALL phones have wifi in them, isn't it? Because when you OPEN YOUR WIFI, all your friends can get around the telcos
  20. think! You could scan in that public domain book you love on your phone, then upload it to your server, and share it on your wifi!
  21. Do you know how great scanning software is on phones now? Do you have a favourite? Could you copy it, and write a better one? DO IT. DOOO IT
  22. Which reminds me. You know Steve Jobs lost that look and feel suit in the 80s? You know what the finests form of flattery is?
  23. You know how there's all that software that you love because it's beautiful, more beautiful than RMS could imagine in the 80s? Steal. It.
  24. I don't mean pirate it. I mean rebuild it, step by step. Make it free and we'll have gmail and google maps and whatever is good about itunes
  25. isn't that re-inventing the wheel, you say? Well sure, but now it's OUR WHEEL. And we're GOING TO DRIVE INTO OUR FUTURE WITH IT
