Targeting devices that don't account for physical size in Viewport

Conversation about viewport issue on iPad Mini and accounting for all the devices that have this challenges in Web designs.

  1. Nexus 7: 800x1280 7.81in device-width: 603px iPad Mini: 768x1024 7.9inch device-width: 768px funny how extra 197px makes web too small.
  2. @lukew Apple can't have their cake (no change in viewport) and eat it too (appropriate viewport given physical size) false economy...
  3. @lukew Correct (...assuming I understand how the platform UI layer works compared to Android..no dynamic native layout units)
  4. @stephanierieger so.. any ideas on why they would not have a different viewport width for web? I don't get it.
  5. @lukew Because they didn't want to fragment. Same 1024 x 768 like the old one.
  6. @lukew In a lot of people's eyes, it would still be fragmentation (many sites still only being designed with Apple devices in mind)
  7. @lukew @stephanierieger are you implying they should have faked Safari's viewport width for the mini like they did for the the iPad 3 and 4?
  8. @jordanwilson @lukew Faked implies it's bad. The viewport is a variable construct...by design. Being able to change the size is a feature.
  9. @stephanierieger @lukew so, all is not lost. But it’d be nice if 12px didn’t look ridiculously ‘orrible? :)
  10. @lukew @StuRobson To be honest, it's nothing new. There's always been devices with bum viewports...it just happens this device is "popular"
  11. .@stephanierieger @sturobson this all started with me looking for a way to address/target all those devices. :)
  12. @lukew There are dpi media queries. They would solve the problem, but apple hasn't implemented them (yet).
  13. @lukew Apple made a decision about how to serve the web to iPad Mini users, and unfortunately for us (and its users) it's sub-obtimal. 1/2
  14. @lukew That being said, I agree with the idea is that we *should* be able to target it if we see the need. 2/2
  15. @lukew @brad_frost why not let users decide? provide mechanisms for change either at site level or browser level (even through bookmarklets)
  16. @StuRobson @aexmo @brad_frost cause there is real issues/money on the line: http://www.lukew.com/ff/entry.asp?1549
  17. @aexmo @lukew @brad_frost or we use the resolution media query (coming to webkit) and hope Safari iOS gets it soon — trac.webkit.org/changeset/1322…
  18. @lukew Thus the +1 on @lyzadanger's tweet. How the Mini handles relative units could make a difference.
