Photobook Meetup

Discussing the photobook meetup idea.

  1. @lpvmagazine Why not start a photobook "club"? All you need are some friends who have photobooks, a place to meet regularly, ...
  2. @jmcolberg Yeah, I'm thinking about that. I already have one invite! It solves MY problem, but I guess I'm thinking broader :)
  3. @lpvmagazine ... and then during each meetup everybody brings one book and presents it, and then afterwards everybody can look.
  4. @lpvmagazine If I lived in NYC I'd totally organize that. Alas... But I'd drop by when I visit (bringing one of my treasures)...
  5. @lpvmagazine So you'd basically turn the group's collection into a virtual library.
  6. @lpvmagazine If you make it too big it gets too hard to organize. Prolly best to start out with local "cells"
  7. @jmcolberg Well, actually, small regional 'clubs/collectives' could probably be organized. Goal would be to connect the local collections.
  8. @jmcolberg Essentially all you'd need would be the database software and then a decent UI for connecting, keeping track and stuff.
  9. @lpvmagazine ... and from those one could then organize larger meetups. Would be fun!
  10. @lpvmagazine But my idea is not so much about a library as about the social aspect: the talking about photobooks.
  11. @lpvmagazine You'd participate not only to see cool books but also to hear cool people talk about them.
  12. @jmcolberg yeah, that's definitely more interesting.Wasn't really thinking that, which is why it's good to just get the ideas out there...
  13. @lpvmagazine Well, it's nice to be able to see books, but why not bring the idea of the internet to actual life and interconnect people?
  14. @FractionMag @lpvmagazine well, YOU start it up. You have enough people down there, and it's prolly easy to organize.
  15. @FractionMag @lpvmagazine And once there are all those groups, all one needs is a website where the groups can get posted etc.
  16. @jmcolberg yeah, absolutely. you just keep connecting the nodes.
  17. @jmcolberg Yeah, absolutely. I mean, who knows what types of collections are hiding out there? Or what can come from the connections...
  18. @lpvmagazine Exactly! And the beauty of people presenting sth. - instead of you picking - is that there'll be real discoveries.
  19. @lpvmagazine I usually discover books when people tell me, even when I'm standing in front of their shelves.
  20. @lpvmagazine People are great to counter one's own selection bias
  21. @jmcolberg Right. "Have you seen this book?" That is always uttered :)
  22. @lpvmagazine Exactly! Just make sure when you organize it it occasionally overlaps with my NYC schedules... ;-)
