Reactions to UK Athletics, Kernel issue

The Twitter community, multiple bloggers, journalists and websites have voiced their opinions about UK Athletics revoking the Kernel's access to Tuesday's one-on-one basketball players interviews. Respond by commenting on our website, tweeting @KyKernel or talking on our Facebook page.

  1. Here is the story that caused UK Athletics to revoke Kernel basketball reporter Aaron Smith's media access to one-on-one player interviews scheduled for Tuesday.
  2. The Kernel wrote a story after talking to DeWayne Peevy, associate athletic director for media relations; a First Amendment lawyer, a Student Press Law Center attorney advocate; a sports public relations expert; and the Kernel reporter in question and the Kernel editor-in-chief.
  3. College Media Matters responds.
  4. Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated responds.

Way to go, Kentucky SIDs. Nobody ever writes about the walk-ons. Someone does, and you revoke access. http://bit.ly/orPaQh

Until Kentucky agrees to #FreeKernel, I think I'll revoke SI coverage of their mediocre football team.

Aggressive reporting got @KernelASmith "punished" by UK today. Some day, that same thing will land Aaron a nice job. http://bit.ly/oKDXvF

@KySportsRadio Pretty sure they had Dwayne's side of the story in there. I see where he's coming from, but I disagree.

Everyone is missing the fact that the Kernel is getting the same access everyone else is getting. They didn't lose anything but a favor.

  17. Peevy told the Kernel Monday evening that there was no written policy about contacting Media Relations first, but reporters knew that was the preferred method. Later, Peevy tweeted a photo of a written policy.
  18. The policy is written in every media guide. No one signs it or anything but its real. http://twitpic.com/6deg66
