Seligman: Adelaide Thinker in Residence

A very incomplete summary of my experience of Prof Martin Seligman's Opening Lecture for his Adelaide Thinker-in-Residence stint

  1. On my way to Seligman talk for #FlourishSA. Taxi was late, I'll be late. Trying to stay positive ;)
  2. Hmm just thought I'd clarify my tweets are a mixture of what Seligman is saying, and where I find my own mental connections #FlourishSA
  3. I find this immensely, well... Positive :=) Full Festival Centre for Seligman #flourishsa http://pic.twitter.com/MKVaWSpM
  4. Gave Kelly's introduction asking how we might improve a quality of life beyond beaches and wine #FlourishSA
  5. We're thinking as to whether the goal of life is more than not being miserable #FlourishSA
  6. Seligman building PERMA, a recipe for well-being: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment #FlourishSA
  7. Differences in PERMA measurements across Europe show diff; northern countries rate higher than Eastern Europe #FlourishSA
  8. Wondering if PERMA or well being also relates perspectives of the future (I think this is link) #flourishSA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3oIiH7BLmg&feature=youtube_gdata_player
  9. Positive emotions can be measured by "Losada ratio". Think mine could improve. Love you all! #FlourishSA
  10. Now looking at engagement, or flow. Best when applying your highest strengths to a challenge. See ted.com/talks/mihaly_c… #FlourishSA
  11. But bravery, kindness & humor are character strengths that... sidetracked by taking impromptu test.... for resilience? #FlourishSA
  12. Ah, thanks @simondivecha - those strengths predict if we're more likely to grow from traumatic events #FlourishSA
  13. Positive interventions are self-reinforcing. Much of therapy can 'melt' over time #FlourishSA
  14. Great two by two matrix on active/passive and destructive/constructive. Being actively constructive heightens relationships #FlourishSA
  15. Talking about different in impacts from doing fun stuff "movies, masturbation" vs philanthropic activities #FlourishSA
  16. The human system is built to get happiness from helping others. also happiness through service here axialent.com #FlourishSA
  17. On grit, & ability especially of kids to respond well to stresses (or stressors). That drives @FreeRangeKids too I expect #FlourishSA
