OR & Me

Operational Research has followed me for many years, even when I didn't know it actually was it.

  1. While I was studying my degree in Economics I didn't realised those subjects that heavily relied on mathematics, statistics and algorithms were actually what I now know it's called 'operational research' (British English; in 'American English' it is called 'operations research'; OR). However, while researching for a project on cultural economics productivity and efficiency, I started to see many references to the term and how engineers were leading the way, so I felt maybe that wasn't my place. It wasn't until 2002 that I accidentally arrived into INFORMS website and decided those people were my pack and from January 2003 I've been a member.
  2. Our INFORMS Member-get-a-Member campaign is underway! Win prizes. ow.ly/8ArUR
  3. Later on, in order to keep pace, by 2005 I started to write this blog, FM Waves, with a puzzling 'Opening Note'. However, I have to admit that I was unsure I was going to focus on writing about OR until the second or third posts. The later is when I started to call myself an operations researcher.
  4. Nowadays, having some papers published about OR, and having adopted OR methodologies all along my professional and personal life, I can say I like to call myself an operations researcher.
  5. Even further, having discovered The OR Society website and their scheme for accreditation I decided to join and apply and now I'm waiting for the committee to inform me about the decision.
  6. The new OR Society website is now ready for visitors. Take a good look round it at theorsociety.com
  7. Will I succeed and become an Associate (AORS)? Maybe; if that's the outcome, I'll engage in further development to become in a decade a Fellow. If I fail (this time), I'll engage in further development to become in a decade a Fellow, too. I'm an operations researcher, but a stubborn one. ;)
