Association Chat: Jealousy!

Every Tuesday at 2 pm ET...if you miss it you'll be sad.

  1. Have you seen your tweets on video? #assnchat Engaging banter with us now! ow.ly/aDkka
  2. [Host](Q1): What is the biggest cause of jealousy in your organization? From the members/from the staff...

  3. [A1] A lack of recognition, more often than not, of the staff's work and contributions. Credit sometimes very misdirected. #assnchat
  4. #assnchat Q1: jealousy in associations. Where to begin? Staff is jealous of perceived "perqs" others get; members are jealous of attention
  5. @kikilitalien tough question. can't really respond honestly on a public account! #assnchat [A1]
  6. A1) I think one way people can be jealous is if they are not praised as much as others - remember everyone is a hard worker #assnchat
  7. (A1) Jealous (or envious) of technologies I can't afford, but others can! #assnchat
  8. [A1] I sometimes see staff tagging onto other person's successes. Same ones usually first to lay blame as well. #assnchat
  9. [A1] I often find myself jealous of the resources (financial/volunteers/staff) other Assns have available to them... #assnchat
  10. [A1] With staff issues, it's probably universal. But with members? Not sure I've seen anything there. #assnchat
  11. [A1] Think some staff envy those who go to our annual meeting -- thinking it's a sort of vacation or just not wanting to miss out. #assnchat
  12. RT @jmcnichol: [A1] Think some staff envy those who go to our annual meeting -- thinking it's a sort of vacation... #assnchat [I see that.]
  13. [Host](Q2): How do you handle jealousy from organization volunteers who feel your org favors one council/vol/etc over another?

  14. [A2] Sadly (or not), b/c many volunteers don't put much stock in the staff, we don't have this issue... #assnchat
  15. A2. Helps to explain charter of the council/volunteer, their purpose, and how it relates back to the bigger mission/strategic plan #assnchat
  16. #assnchat Q2: perception is hard to overcome. No matter how much you explain, perceptions won't change easily.
  17. A2. Perception is often fueled by poor communication or lack thereof. Different volunteer groups have varying purposes & goals #assnchat
  18. [A2] Decision making processes that are more transparent can help to prevent jealousy. #assnchat ow.ly/aDlYY
  19. Q2. For the most part assn. volunteers recognize the workhorses & give them credit & often wonder how they do their "day" job. #assnchat
  20. [Host](Q3): How can transparency and authenticity help with jealousy within an organization?
