Can Stories Be Data? Does Data Tell Stories? Both Useful?
There are lots of debates in the amazing world of measurement and learning. The only valid data is quantitative data ....Real time analysis is not useful because it is drive by analysis.... Make data-driven decisions only, don't trust your gut ever ....Only measure impact, not process .........And so it goes. These are tweets and conversations that illustrate some of the debate.
GlobalGiving Storytelling - Turning Anecdotes into Useful Data"Tell us about a time when a person or an organization tried to change something in your community." Social challenges are complex. We have hundreds of projects that address social issues around the world.
GlobalGiving - Story Tools for Community Based OrganizationsWe use Cognitive Edge's SenseMaker® Software to look for patterns in hundreds of stories. Two examples are shown below. In both cases, blue dots represent stories about more recent events and red dots, older events from 2007.- @kanter @orgnet @cdegger @globalgiving @dmacca @timothyogden @afine And data amplifies story, as story amplifies data.
- @CDEgger @globalgiving @dmacca @timothyogden @kanter @afine @fdncenter Actually "turning data into stories" is the real trick!
- @orgnet Yes, fractal-fashion :) Analysis, pattern-making -> new stories emerge @globalgiving @dmacca @timothyogden @kanter @afine @fdncenter
- @kanter p.s. now how the heck do I measure all this twitter love?! =) #measurenp
- @jdeancoffey @kanter When the issue of interest moves from measurement for accountability/compliance to #evaluation for learning.
- . @DanielOlias @kanter at the same time, I think we should be cautious not to be solely data-driven. Gut feeling counts for something still.
