On state of podcasting and audio storytelling

The New York Times announcement that it is "getting out of the podcast business" kicked off a discussion about the future of the medium and what audiences want from digital audio.

What does it say about podcasts that, per @shearm on final @thecaucus cast, "@nytimes has decided to get out of the podcast business?"

@jsb I don't know how much it says about podcasts - seems pub radio podcast audience still growing.

@jcstearns I think that growth is minimal. cc: @PRX. I doubt NYT is only one not seeing podcasting ROI. Mobile apps killed the podcast star.

@jsb Maybe "podcast" isn't the right term for new kinds of innovative and interactive digital audio content? cc @prx

@jsb @jcstearns I would place my bet on interactive on-demand streaming via HTML5 mobile web; @SoundCloud @AudioBoo & social media

@jsb @jcstearns however, podcasting or whatever it morphs into is still, for now, the junior league to bcast radio. 2 yrs from now? Nope

@rbole Yes, I agree. I was conflating these new forms of online audio with the term "podcast" - worth making a distinction tho. cc @jsb

@jsb But I think mobile apps can/are another tool for accessing/augmenting podcast content. Not an either/or necessarily. cc @prx

@rbole My main point is that I think audio storytelling remains compelling & important, new tools/formats will continue to expand its impact

  10. "The signs of broadcast apocalypse are here."

  11. rbole
@jsb @jcstearns In-dash IP streaming is going to be the bcast radio killer, not immediate, but relentlessly eroding the mrkt

@jsb @jcstearns ironic that HD radio, a minimally useful tech, spawned the 2nd digi channel that has birthed so many next gen radio stars

@rbole Content matters. Delivery method does not. We need to be wherever the ears are. And there are still places where audio is best.

@dcappello not disputing that at all. Radio is alive & well and will be for sometime. However the clear signs of bcast apocalypse are there

  16. In which podcasting is compared to Star Trek: TNG

  17. rbole
@jsb @jcstearns small on-demand streams delivered via IP vs. small on-demand file delivered via IP is not such a big leap

@jsb @jcstearns, @PRX sees power in podcasting if you broaden def beyond 'subscribe in iTunes', esp for new voices. cf @romanmars

@rekha6 @jcstearns @rbole Pew Internet Life seem to have done no research on podcasting since '08. Not sign of vibrancy http://www.pewinternet.org/Search.aspx?q=podcasting&sort=date

@rekha6 @jcstearns @rbole from that study: 22% adults *download* (not listen to) podcasts; 51% listen to music online.
